graduate.â
Sonji lives in New Haven, Connecticut, with her husband, Rondell. Her ânâ I arenât as close as I am with Leona or my sister Kara. I think Iâm probably the closest to those two, more so than with Sonji ânâ Karina, because they were the ones who spent the most time with me. Usually, wherever one of them went, I went with her.
âWell, I canât wait to graduate. Trust. Iâm so over high school.â
âDonât rush it. Savor it for as long as you can. Trust. Itâll be over before you know it.â
â Hunni , four months ânâ counting. I canât wait.â
âWell, wait until you get out into the real world, sweetie. Youâre going to wish you could have stayed in school longer. Youâll be tryna rewind the clock. Donât rush it.â
âChile, boom ! I canât wait until Iâm eighteen ânâ grown. Iâm outta here.â
âAnd where are you off to? Have you even given any thought to what you want to do once you graduate, since youâre so anxious to be out on your own?â
I shrug. âI donât know. I thought maybe I could come stay with you.â
She peels her eyes from off the road. âOh, really? And do what?â
I toss my hair. âShop ânâ be fabulous, of course.â
She shakes her head, laughing. âGirl, get those grandiose delusions out of your head. You have a lot to learn.â
I turn toward her. Poke my lips out. âSo, youâre saying I canât come stay with you?â
âNo. Iâm not saying that. Iâm saying itâs time you start giving some thought to your future. And moving in with me can not be your postâhigh school life plan. Have you even taken the SATs?â
Ohgod, is she serious? Not this again .
âYesss. I did. I took them a couple of months ago. But Iâm going to take them again, just to see if I can improve my score.â Truth is, Iâm okay with my SAT scores: 1100. Iâll take it. Now what Iâm going to do with them is a whole other story.
Iâm not sure I wanna go to college. I wanna travel to exotic places ânâ be able to wine ânâ dine in fancy restaurants. I wanna rock lots of ice ânâ rock a fly whip, like my sisters. I think Iâma have to snatch me a baller ânâ marry rich.
âGood. Get your college degree, then land a great job and you can have the kind of life youâve always dreamed of.â
Uh, ohhkay. âGirl, hush. I already have a fabulous life, hun . Iâm young. Gorgeous. Smart. And I get all of my sistersâ wardrobes. What more could a girl ask for?â
She chuckles. âAnd letâs not forget being spoiled rotten. And while weâre at it, let me add conceited to the mix.â
âHahaha. You wish. Never that. Okay, maybe a lil spoiled, though.â
She shoots me a look. âA little ? Really?â
I laugh. âOkay, okay. A lot. But itâs mostly your fault.â
She laughs with me. âYeah, yeah. I know. Iâm guilty as charged.â
I look over at my sister ânâ smile. I love her so, so much. I swear. I donât know if she realizes how much I look up to her. Sheâs like everything I want to be. Fly ânâ paid!
âMom said you and her got into it the other night,â she says, broaching the subject ever so lightly. Ugh. She knows I hate talking about our mother. Well, I donât mind talking about her; just not talking about something sheâs told one of my sisters about me , which is usually some level of exaggerated BS.
âNo,â I say, shifting in my seat. I reach for the controls on the side ânâ adjust my seat. âWe didnât get into anything. She slick-talked ânâ I checked. Game over.â
âShe says you told her to kiss the back of yourââ
âOmigod! Lies ânâ
