ones with me,â she smiled, âand starting three weeks ago Iâm on the road to new memories, and Archieâs on that journey with me.â
It was how OâReilly had felt last April when Kitty had said âI do.â âGood for you, Kinky.â
âAnd please remember, Kinky,â Kitty said, âyou are welcome here always as our friend.â It was only then that OâReilly saw the hint of a tear in his old friendâs eyes.
There was a knock on the door.
âCome in,â Kinky said.
Donal Donnellyâs carroty mop and buck teeth popped in with the springiness of a jack-in-the-box going sideways.
âCome in, Donal,â OâReilly said. âI do appreciate your volunteering to help.â
âOch sure, wouldnât everybody in the village and townland walk on hot coals for our Kinky? Welcome home, Mrs. Auchinleck.â
âThank you, Donal,â she said.
âItâs not a bit of bother, so itâs not, and hasnât Mister Bishop loaned us a van, and all?â
âHe had to,â said OâReilly. âFlo told him to, and you know how Flo can be.â
âI do that,â said Donal. âShe can be a right ould targe when it suits her.â
âMister Donnelly,â said Kinky sternly, hiding her smile behind a sheaf of wrapping paper. âIâll have you knowââ
â And, â said Donal, â and she can have a heart of corn when her friends are in need. But our Flo can be the right taskmaster, make you no mistake.â
âAnd so can I,â said OâReilly with a mock scowl. âI want the three of us men to get all the boxes into the van and take them round to Archieâs.â
âArchie and Kinkyâs,â Kitty said.
âSo jump to it, Misss tah Christyun,â said Barry in an uncanny impression of Charles Laughtonâs Captain Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty . It made OâReilly laugh so much he nearly dropped the box of books heâd just picked up. He set it down. âGentlemen,â he said. âIâm sure we can pull this job off smoothly if Doctor Laverty refrains from acting the lig. Thereâll be more help unloading at the other end. Archieâs son Rory is coming down from Palace Barracks to give a hand.â
âI promise. And itâll be great to see Rory,â said Barry.
âAnd,â said OâReilly, âonce the job is done, it will be my pleasure to treat the gentlemen of the moving crew, those who want to come, to the first pint of the evening in the Mucky Duck. I regret, ladies, that I am not responsible for Ulsterâs archaic licensing laws, so you wonât be able to join us.â
âThatâs perfectly all right,â Kitty said. âIâll not be coming in the van if thatâs all right, Kinky? I have a date with a black Lab for a walk in the dunes on Ballybucklebo Beach.â
âGrand, so. Arthur Guinness will be a happy dog and Iâll be settled and content in our new home with Archie.â
âSo, you run along and play with your friends, Fingal,â Kitty said, and gave him a wicked smile, âbut donât think that now Kinky has moved you can be late for your dinner.â

Brave New World
âCome with me,â Surgeon Commander Wilcoxson said, heading for a curtain to the right.
Fingal finished the salute heâd begun when his superior officer had appeared and followed him into what he assumed was the sick bay. Instead he found himself in a small alcove. Directly ahead, double doors led to what must be another room on the shipâs starboard side. The sick bay attendant had disappeared through a screen behind and to Fingalâs left.
âHeâs just gone into the sick bay proper,â Wilcoxson said. âIâll show you round later.â He held open yet another curtain and stepped through. âIn hereâs the surgeonâs examining room.
