storms! Well, he must be thrilled tonight, because this one is blowing the lid off New Mexico!
It finally dies out after midnight. But before I can calm down and go to sleep, we get a telephone call. Dadâsthe only doctor in town, so this must be a medical emergency.
I stick my head into the hall. I can almost feel the wind from my dad hustling into his clothes behind the master bedroom door. And my parentsâ âwhisperedâ conversation sounds more like shouting. Iâm dying to know whatâs going on. Somethingâs up; something big.
The door flies open, and I catch my fatherâs parting words to Mom. â. . . by the time we get through with him, itâll be the truth.â He wheels around, and thatâs when he sees me standing there. âGo back to bed, Malik.â
âWhoâs sick?â
âI suppose youâll hear about it tomorrow anyway. Itâs Eli Frieden.â
âIs it bad?â I ask.
âItâs not good. Heâs had a relapse of his recent illness.â
I can tell itâs not good. Dadâs leaving the house without one of his dumb bow ties, which happens about once per millennium. It usually takes an outbreak of plague for that.
âIs itâserious?â
âHeâs not going to die, if thatâs what you mean,â my father replies. âI have to go.â
My mother wraps her arms around me as the doorcloses downstairs. âDonât worry, honey. Iâm sure your friend will be fine.â
I bristle. âWhat planet are you living on, Mom? Iâm not his nursemaid; Iâm not even his friend. I hate everybody equally.â
Sheâs used to me. âYouâre all close friends, all thirty of you.â
âTwenty-nine, but whoâs counting?â I mumble.
âI forgot about Randy.â She hugs me tighter. âThat must have been upsetting to youââ
âI already told you it wasnât.â
ââand now this on top of that.â
Even if we lived in a city, with millions of mothers in it, mine would still be the most annoying. I just want to twist out of her suffocating embrace. But I donât, because she has a point.
I shouldnât care about Eli, but I do. What choice do I have? In Happy Valley, weâre all basically stuck with each other.
The next day at school, Stanley Cole and Melanie Brandt are trading Purple People Eater cardsâRump L. Stiltskin for Sunshine plus Dodecahedron Face.
Iâm totally blown away. âWhy?â
âStiltskinâs worth two,â Stanley explains. âHe performs photosynthesis.â
âSo does your lawn,â I point out.
âI like Dodecahedron Face,â says Melanie. âI see him near my house sometimes. Heâs cute.â
âCute?â Tori challenges. âHis head is shaped like a dodecahedron!â
âWhatâs a dodecahedron?â I ask irritably. âWait, scratch that. I donât care. Listen, Friedenâs not coming to school today. He had a relapse of pukey-pukey last night.â
âIs it serious?â Tori probes.
I shrug dramatically. Dad finally rolled in this morning while I was getting ready for school. If there was bad news, he would have told me then. âWell, the Purples didnât have to drag him home this time. He was home already.â
Amber shoots me a disapproving look. âYou donât have to be so mean about it.â
âLighten up,â I shoot back. âHeâs not dead. He probably just wishes he was.â
Hectorâs uncertain. âYour dad never figured out what was wrong with Eli the first time around.â
I glare at him. âAre you saying my fatherâs a lousy doctor?â
He backs off. âNo, Malik! Not at all! Itâs justâif wedonât know what it is, how do we know it isnât contagious?â
âThatâs right, Hector, think about yourself,â Amber
