his bulge was apparent beneath them. He held a
spatula in his hand. She noticed the table was set for two, with a little vase
of flowers in the middle.
    He was
totally clean, and so was she. She remembered showering the night before and
going straight to sleep, once again wrapped in Ewan’s strong arms.
    “Sleep
well?” he asked.
    Eva nodded
and went to the bathroom. She splashed cold water on her face and slapped
herself in the cheeks. Maybe it was all some strange dream brought on by
exhaustion. She’d been working herself to the bone before she flew to Paris,
and she hadn’t really relaxed since she got here. But the events of the night
before became clearer the more she focused on them.
    Ewan was a
werewolf.
    And he saved
her.
    Why?
    He knocked
on the door, and she jumped.
    “Breakfast
is ready,” he said.
    Eva looked
at her reflection. She looked better rested than usual. The bags below her eyes
were almost gone, but her dark hair was a mess. She ran her fingers though it
and braided it quickly before stepping out to meet him.
    Ewan sat at
the table, digging into his food.
    She crossed
her arms and glanced at the door. That was her only escape if he attacked her.
Hopefully this neighborhood was livelier during the day than it was at night.
If he wasn’t going to say anything about what happened, she would.
    “You’re a
werewolf,” she said.
    He raised an
eyebrow and shrugged. “You caught me. I am a werewolf. Are you going to sit
down and eat?”
    Eva shook
her head. Hearing him say it was the final blow. “How can I sit down and eat
with a werewolf?”
    “You didn’t
seem to have a problem with it yesterday or the day before that. Come along.
Before it gets cold. I’m not going to bite,” he said with a smirk.
    Her stomach
rumbled, and the food did smell good. Plus, he hadn’t hurt her, quite the
opposite. She sat and took a slow bite of eggs.
    He watched
her intently. “Do you like it, Evangeline?”
    She nodded
and took a long sip of coffee. She needed it for this conversation. “Well. Are
you going to explain yourself?”
    “Explain
what?” he asked as he crunched on bacon.
    “Why are you
a werewolf? Why did you protect me? What’s going on?” she said around each bite
of food. Whatever his downfalls, Ewan was a good cook.
    He smiled.
“I was turned into a werewolf at sixteen. It’s a long story. I protected you
because I wanted to – no, I need to. And what do you mean by ‘what’s going
on?’”
    He needed to
protect her? She flushed and took a piece of bread. Butter dripped from it, but
she didn’t care at the moment. “Why did those men attack us? Why did you kill
them?”
    Ewan sighed.
“They were after you, lass, not us. They smelled that divine scent of yours and
couldn’t help themselves. They wanted to mate with you. I killed them because
it’s the only way to stop a wolf once he has his heart set on something. Do you
wish I hadn’t?”
    Eva didn’t
know what to say. If those men were just going to keep attacking her, she
didn’t want that. But to wish them dead. “Were they criminals? Bad ones?”
    Ewan nodded,
his face somber. “Yes. They were the type that drowned kittens and burned down
orphanages. And they were going to rape you. Is that bad enough?”
    She scowled
at him. He wasn’t serious about the kittens and orphans, but those men did
attack her. “Fine. I don’t hold it against you.”
    “How kind of
you,” he said with a nod of his head.
    Eva didn’t
say anything about the rest of the night. His body pinning her to the wall, or
his mouth pleasuring her in ways she’d never dreamed. He felt her fat thighs
and stomach by now. Why wasn’t he disgusted and pushing her aside? What more
could he possibly want?
    Then
something he’d said earlier sparked in her mind. She chewed the rest of her
breakfast without tasting it. Those men wanted to mate with her? Did that mean

    “Does mate
mean what I think it means? They wanted to get me pregnant with
