mine.
I pushed away from Blaze before he could
thrust his tongue into my mouth. “Later.”
Silver dust exploded near Jade’s bed and fell
onto her tiny cheeks. Zoe picked her up, careful not to wake
her.
    We’re almost done.
A bang came from the glass wall. I spun
around. Three sorcerers draped in red robes threw glimmering
scarlet balls of electricity at the glass. Cracks formed as each
orb smashed into the glass.
    The nursery shook.
“Zoe, do what I told you to,” Blaze muttered
and then headed toward the glass wall, growling with the crystal
sword in his hand.
I turned to Zoe, raised my eyebrows, and
asked, “What is he talking about?”
“Focus.” Zoe walked over to me as he held
Jade.
I turned around to Blaze. He stood at the
glass wall and showed the sorcerers his middle fingers.
More cracks appeared. Five new sorcerers ran
to the nursery. A couple of the children began to wake up from
their beds. I wished I could take them all.
I returned my focus to Blaze. “Come over here
so we can leave.”
Zoe’s arm came around my waist. I froze,
snapping my head back. “What are you doing? You’re just teleporting
Jade. Blaze is going to take me.”
“No, Carmy.” Zoe avoided my eyes. Jade
shifted in his long arms, still dreaming. He leaned down to me.
“The demon changed the plan.”
“No!” I pushed against Zoe’s arm, but it
remained locked to me. I turned my face back to Blaze and yelled,
“The plan wasn’t to fight if we didn’t have to it was to—”
“No. My plan was always option one.” Blaze
kept his back to me. “I was always going to turn myself in. I just
wasn’t sure how I was going to get you and Jade out, but now I
trust Zoe to do that for me.”
“Get over here so we can go!” I hit Zoe’s
arm.
Jade stirred a little but remained
asleep.
“Say your goodbyes so we can leave,” Zoe
whispered.
    Tears dripped down my face.
“I didn’t want you to sacrifice yourself!” I
yelled at Blaze.
He spun around. A blast came from behind him
on the other side of the glass. There were now thirty sorcerers
flinging balls and casting spells. It was only a matter of time
before the see-through wall would collapse.
“Adae would never stop searching for you and
Jade. He can’t get into the outer world, but he could hire others
to go in.” Blaze’s chocolate eyes pierced mine. “If I traded myself
for you, he’d forget about you both. You would be free.”
“No,” I cried, shaking my head.
One tear fell from the corner of Blaze’s eye.
He brought his hand up to his face, wiped it away, and then looked
at Zoe. “Take them.”
“Wait.” I quickly struggled to break free,
but there was no use. Zoe’s grip was too tight.
“I’d kiss you right now,” Blaze whispered.
“But you’d just bite me and try to take me along.”
The world began to spin around me. I waved my
hands around, screaming and trying to stop Zoe from taking us away.
I could see the glass wall shatter into tiny pieces and hear Blaze
say, “I love you, Carmen.”
And then there was only silver dust swarming
around me.

Chapter Six
Blaze
I missed Carmen already. Thoughts of the
softness of her skin haunted me. Even now, that honey fragrance
clung to my senses, making me forget about the cold silver and sage
chains that held me up to the cell’s stone wall.
A female sorcerer guided her hand up and down
my length. The floating candles’ light flickered on her pale skin.
Her red hair appeared in disarray as it fell over her shoulders and
blended with her crimson red dress. She wasn’t ugly. She just
wasn’t Carmen.
“This is truly a treat,” she said as her
rough fingers scratched against my flesh.
I gritted my teeth and stared straight ahead,
beyond this new bidder and Adae who stood behind her. They’d been
haggling over the price of my slavery for the past hour.
How pathetic she is, to need to buy and
enslave someone to pleasure her.
Years ago, I would have mentally called Iblis
