by the two men, wolf shifters, who she loved with all her heart, but they couldn’t stand the sight of her. Their father, Jack Keekoti, had been pleased to learn he would be a grandfather. Several hours ago, he’d kissed Kate on the cheek, and left with the steaks with Gran’s special ingredients to break the spell on his sons.
Gran sat next to her at the kitchen table. “You’ve got the gift, angel. Spells usually don’t work out for the novice. You cooked up a doozy, and it held together. I’ve got some things you need to read to hone your skills.”
“I think I have bigger things to worry about, like being a single mother. I’m through with magic, Gran.”
“Sweetheart, you’ve got two magical babies growing inside you. You need your witchcraft. Why would you say you’re through with magic?”
“Because I fed cookies to Rance and Troy that hexed them into making love to me. Sure, you fixed them. They’re normal again, but now we are back to where we started with them still hating me. Can’t blame them after what I did.” She put her face in her hands. “By now, their dad has told them I’m pregnant. They’ll never want to see me again.”
“Angel, don’t cry. Don’t you remember what I told you about the cookies you baked? They only work on someone if there is real love there for the other person.”
“You said desire. Sure, lust is lust. Love is an entirely different thing. They can’t love me, but they can hate me. They’ve hated me for a very long time. Now, they have even more reason to.”
Her grandmother stroked her hair. “I’m sure everything will work out, angel.”
“How can you say that, Gran? I have fallen in love with them. Everything they said was just the cookies talking. I’ve lost them once again.”
A knock on the door startled her.
“Who can that be at this hour?” Gran grabbed a rifle and walked to the door.
Kate followed, noting the time on the clock on the wall. 12:01 a.m.
    “Who is it?” Gran asked.
“It’s Troy, Gran. Rance is with me.”
Gran winked at her and sat down in her chair, draping the rifle over her lap. “They’re not here for me, Kate. Open the door.”
She did and found Troy and Rance standing on the porch. They smiled at her.
“Do you know what day it is, Kate?” Troy asked.
“I’m confused. What are you doing here?”
Rance grabbed her hand. “Think. What day is this?”
“Gran, they’re still acting strange. Are you sure they aren’t under the spell?”
    “Quite sure.”
    “Tell her, Rance.”
    “Tell me what?”
“It’s Christmas Eve, Kate. It’s our birthday as of one minute ago.”
She’d forgotten all about their birthday in all the confusion. “Guys, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to…”
“Darlin’, shh.” Troy smiled. “It’s okay. We’re the ones who should apologize.”
“No. I’m the one that made the cookies.”
“This isn’t about that.” Rance grabbed her hand. “Besides, I’m so thankful you did make them. Without them, we would’ve never opened up to you, let you know the truth about how we feel about you. We hurt you a long time ago. We should’ve trusted our hearts, but we didn’t. Please, forgive us.”
“Of course I forgive you. Please, forgive me.”
“Nothing to forgive, honey.” Troy grabbed her other hand. “We got you something for your birthday.”
“But I didn’t get you anything.”
“Oh, but you did. More than you know. You’ve made us dads.” Rance knelt down. “I love you, Kate.”
Troy took to his knee. “And I love you, too.”
They each took one of her hands. “How would you like us for your birthday, Christmas, and forever?”
“I love you both very much.” Kate had been running away for too long. Now, she was really home. “Of course, yes.”
