you’re used to having all this space to yourself. You
sure you want us in your way? We have plenty of time after the wedding.”
Drew looks into his mug and I can
tell there’s something on his mind. He’s starting to fidget.
“What is it, Drew? What’re you
not telling me?” I’m really starting to worry now.
“Lily, I know it’s only been one
night, but I like having you here. It’s like there’s more life in the house. I
know it’s stupid, because there’s actually another person in the house, but it
just feels more comfortable to me. I probably sound like a sap, but that’s how
I feel.”
Wow. I did not expect that at
all. I had wondered how he liked living in such a big house all by himself. I
guess I know now. I like the house. It’s obviously much bigger than my
apartment and it’s so private and quiet here.
“Let’s see how today goes and
then we’ll discuss it again, okay? I’m having a hard time keeping up with all
these changes.” I smile and put my hand on his, hoping to soften the blow.
    “I understand, Lily. I don’t want
to make you feel uncomfortable. Let’s head out. We can stop by your apartment
first, and then go visit my mom. After that, we can do whatever we feel like,
okay?”
“That sounds great. I’ll go get
my purse and be right back.” I need a second to get my emotions under control.
I head back to the guest room. My clothes are still in here, but I wonder if
I’ll be sleeping here. Last night was great, so I kind of hope I can sleep in
Drew’s room again . Seriously? I have to stop
thinking about sex. I check my makeup, pick up my purse, and head down to
meet Drew.

We pull up to my apartment and
Drew meets me at the front of the car. I head toward the building when he
gently takes my hand, walking next to me. I can’t help the little smile that
forms on my face at the gesture. Once in my apartment, Nala jumps on me from the back of the couch.
    “Hello, pretty kitty. Did you
miss me?”
    Nala rubs her head
under my chin and kneads her front paws on my chest. She starts to purr and
then jumps down to sniff Drew. I look at him and he has a smile on his face.
    “Hello, Nala .
I’m Drew,” he says as he squats down to pet my beloved cat. I’ve always trusted Nala’s opinion of people and if she doesn’t like
someone, she’ll walk away after sniffing them. That doesn’t happen now.
Instead, she puts her paws on Drew’s knees and meows at him. I’ve never seen
her do this with anyone and I’m flabbergasted.
“I think she likes you.” I’m
really smiling now.
“Of course she does, Lily. I’m
adorable.”
I can’t help but laugh as I head
for the kitchen to fill Nala’s food and water dishes.
She hears me open the cabinet and comes running. Once she’s taken care of, I
check and make sure everything is as I left it. Drew’s looking at the pictures
on my entertainment center.
“Is this your mom?” He’s looking
at a shot of us taken at my cousin’s wedding last year.
    “Yes, that’s her.”
“I see where you get your
beauty.”
I turn away, blushing. I think he
does it on purpose.
“Thank you. I’m all set to go.
Are you ready?”
    “Yep. Let’s go.”
The drive to the care center is
about twenty minutes from my apartment. When we pull into the parking lot, I
take in my surroundings. There are rocking chairs on the covered front porch
and baskets of plants hanging from the eaves. The landscaping is beautiful,
with seasonal flowers in bloom, and a waterfall off to one side. The building
looks well maintained and there’s plenty of room to walk around outside. Once
inside I’m pleasantly surprised. There isn’t that smell that most places like
this have. There are couches and wingback chairs situated in small groups in the
lobby, making it easy to have a conversation. The dining room is just ahead,
and it’s decorated simply but it looks as much like a dining room in a
residential home as it possibly can.
