more than an unnecessary distraction. We’d get through the current situation, one way or another.
Look, life isn’t all about your goddamn feelings. Work still has to get done and as usual it was left up to me. I’d return to LA soon enough to handle things with Maddie, so I put out of my mind for the time being. And in any case, I had an opportunity for her which, if it worked out, would set her acting career off on the perfect trajectory after we completed the project we were working on now.
Anyway, back to the meeting. I’d gotten word from my contacts in LA that bids were really heating up on a rom com screenplay. I hadn’t read the thing myself but I had enough respect for my team to trust their judgment about its commercial viability. I decided to handle the negotiations for it, sight unseen. Sometimes in business, you just have to take a risk on a goddamn flyer. All of my biggest successes came from taking chances others wouldn’t.
They’d priced it way beyond what I thought was fair, though. I had my number in mind and I wasn’t leaving London until I got them down to it. But, like anyone else, they have the mistaken belief their precious creation is worth more than it actually is in the real world. It would take a bit of time to talk some sense into them. I dug in for the duration, however long it might be.
In any case, after a two-day marathon session, we wound up at a nightclub around one in the morning. They arranged a VIP section and bottle service for us. Normally, I didn’t go in for all the pretentious bullshit. When you have money, at a certain point, not much impresses you. You can only eat so many goddamn lobsters. You know what I mean? Still, I liked these guys well enough, so I figured I’d put up with all the pomp and circumstance.
At first I was a bit put off by all the noise from the music, the crowd. After all, I wasn’t twenty-three anymore. Still, the drinks kept coming, and as the effects of the alcohol settled in, I mellowed. For the most part, we chatted and got to know each other a little better outside of their offices. And I was in need of a bit of mindless distraction. Of course it wasn’t long before our presence there brought a shapely diversion right to my lap.
At first a couple of them showed up. Then one or two more. Like a well-oiled machine, the scantily-clad group of women began to mingle with the guys, when a final one emerged from the crowd of dancing, sweaty bodies. She was the one that caught my eye.
What a goddamn beauty. Fucking stunning, really.
Tall, six feet at least in her heels. She wore a skin tight mini-dress and what can I say? She was easy on the eyes.
She swayed when she walked. But not in a goddamn forced way. It was the way she moved naturally. You could tell. She swept her dress under her knees as she took a seat beside me and turned her upper body in my direction. Her legs shimmered in the dim light of the club. Nothing was out of place, or accidental, about her appearance.
Curious to hear her pitch, I licked my lips as I reached for my cocktail. I’d already had quite a bit to drink at this point. And I could handle myself; but for some reason, I’d gotten drunk to a point I ordinarily don’t. In any case, I took a sip.
Her eyes were dark, almost black, and they sparkled like onyx as she leaned in towards me. Shocks of matching ink black hair curled in wild strands in front of her face. Like something from Greek mythology, she smiled at me with a seductive curl to her lips.
“I’m Ginger,” she cooed. “What’s your name, handsome?”
I took a pull from my beverage as she spoke but didn’t reply. She edged closer and that’s when her scent first hit me. Most of these girls always smelled about the same. Like they’d sprayed cotton candy from a bottle all over their body. I often wondered why they felt the need. Maybe it was to cover up. You know, the shame of it all? I wasn’t a goddamn shrink or anything, but it sure seemed to
