    hieroglyphics: A formal type of ancient Egyptian writing using symbols or pictures to create meanings or sounds.
    ibw: The tent where Egyptian priests cleansed and purified the newly dead as part of the mummification process.
    ka: One of the many aspects of the ancient Egyptian soul; the ka was like a person’s double, the life force of the unique individual.
    mummification: The process by which a deceased body is dried out and preserved.
    natron: A type of salt used in ancient Egypt to dry out the body during the mummification process.
    Nile River: A north-flowing river that cuts through Africa. In Egypt, the river flooded annually, after which it left rich silt for fertile farming on the river banks.
    Nun: The primeval waters of abyss; the waters of chaos from which Atum-Ra and all life emerged.
    per nefer: The house of beauty, where the body was perfumed, oiled, stuffed, and wrapped during the mummification process.

    senet: An ancient board game dating to predynastic (pre-king) Egypt. Nobody knows exactly how it was played, but it may have been a precursor to today’s backgammon.
    shabtis: Small statuettes, often in mummified form, of figures that could be called upon to magically come to life and do all the hard work the deceased preferred to avoid in the afterlife.
    wabet: A special room or area where priests emptied, dried, and embalmed bodies for mummification.
    Wernes: Where Osiris lived; the fertile lands in the afterworld where the blessed returned to life; where Ra distributed fertile fields to the blessed dead.
