my eyes, I remain still for a few minutes to compose myself. He’s down there now. Eating. In his fucked up little cave.
    Don’t fucking think about it!
I grit my teeth to keep from screaming in frustration because I can’t not think about it. No matter how strong I try to be, there are some things I can’t block out. It’s an impossible feat. Nobody is that strong. Not even me.
    Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
I pop my eyes open and quickly stand up. Logan’s down in the basement so I know he can’t hear the door. If he happens to look at his phone, he’ll see me open the door on the camera feed but something tells me he’ll be too preoccupied.
Smoothing my hair down and taking a calming breath, I affix a smile and prepare myself to greet whoever is at the door. He’d warned me that we may start having unwanted visitors soon and to always be on my game. I rush over to the front door and open it quickly, prepared to send the visitors on their way.
Logan’s napping , I’ll tell them. Come visit another time , I’ll say.
I half expect to see his neighbor Ruby from down the road who likes to deliver casseroles from time to time because she thinks he’s a lonely bachelor. But instead, I lock eyes with him .
    Donovan Jayne.
His grey-blue eyes widen momentarily before his gaze hardens. “Where in the fuck have you been for the last three years, Nadia? The letter you sent explaining how you needed to ‘go find yourself’ was bullshit, wasn’t it?”
It was complete bullshit. He’s right. I take a step back and glance over his shoulder. Thankfully, Mamá isn’t with him. I don’t think I could take seeing her. Not after so long. It would break me and I absolutely cannot break. Not when I’m so close.
“I’m in love and we’re getting married,” I blurt out, ignoring his mentioning the letter, the quiver in my voice belying my words.
He scowls and shakes his head. “Not to him you’re not. Not with Logan fucking Baldwin. Over my dead body!”
“Please,” I beg and hold my hands up defensively. “Just leave, mi cielo .”
His entire body freezes at my words. After Kasey was taken all those years ago, Donovan had made good on his promise to help me search for her. He’d spent an ungodly amount of money on private investigators and donations to the police department, so they could utilize the very best search methods at their disposal. He protected me when I needed it most as a young woman. I’d never spoken against him again. Our relationship developed into…a very close one.
I love Donovan and owe him a lot.
    Everything in fact.
Which is why I need him to get the hell out of here before he ruins it all.
“Donovan, please,” I try again, my voice growing shrill with anxiety. “I’m okay. I promise. Confia en mi.” Trust me.
Ignoring my words, he storms inside the house and draws me into his arms. His embrace is greedy and starved. But none of that matters now because I have a job to do. Selfish for one brief second of happiness though, I inhale his clean scent and let it take root in my lungs. When he starts pressing kisses into my hair, I clutch onto the back of his suit jacket and take a welcome reprieve of a few more seconds with him.
He’s the only comfort in this world I can physically touch.
All of my other comforts are just out of reach.
“You’re coming home, baby. Now.” His voice is a possessive growl and he pulls away to stare down at me. “Grab your purse or whatever. I’ll take you back home.”
I’m already shaking my head before he even gets the words out. “N-N-No! I love Logan and am marrying him!”
His face falls, devastation contorting his features, but when I hear heavy footsteps approaching, he snaps his gaze to Logan who I can sense with every part of my being as he enters the room. Donovan’s face turns murderous and his entire body tenses with rage.
“You motherfucker!” Donovan roars and pushes past me, charging for Logan.
    I shriek and scramble out
