Before she could question her actions, she broke off into a run. âHey, guys, wait for me.â
She caught up with them at the entrance to the maze.
âOh shit.â Julie was half laughing while trying to catch her breath. âDid we just do that?â
âI think they were going to end it early anyway,â Abby said. âThere really wasnât much in the box to begin with.â
âShh, I hear them.â Sasha could barely make the sound out of the three men. âLetâs go into the maze.â
Sheâd been through the maze only once. The day after they arrived, Cole had walked through it with her. At the time, she been captivated by the different types of plants she saw. Now she wished sheâd paid closer attention to the path they needed to take.
âThereâs a back entrance to the house somewhere around here.â Sasha tried to picture an aerial view of the maze. âUgh, I shouldâve been listening when Cole was going over the pattern of the pathways.â
âI donât hear them anymore.â Julie looked over her shoulder. âDo you think they gave up?â
Abby snorted and then whispered, âHave you ever known them to give up on anything, ever?â
âI donât think âgive upâ is in Coleâs vocabulary.â
âI know Nathanielâs never heard of it.â
âThen why canât we hear them?â Julie asked.
Sasha thumped her friendâs shoulder. âBecause they donât want us to hear them.â
âOr maybe because theyâre planning what to do to us when we get back.â
They were all quiet as they thought about that. But really, how bad could it be? Sasha thought. There were three of them, after all.
âOkay,â Sasha said. âHereâs the plan. We find the exit in the maze that leads to the back of the house. We go in through the old servantsâ entrance. Thatâll put us in the kitchen. From there, we sneak through the pantry because it leads to the ballroom. We go through the ballroom out to the back stairs and up to our bedrooms. Itâs foolproof!â
Julie bit her bottom lip. âI donât know. It sounds too easy.â
âEasy?â Abby asked. âWith all that sneaking around? Weâll be lucky if we make it to the house, much less all the way upstairs. Hell, theyâre probably on the other side of this hedge, listening to everything weâre saying.â
âI know,â Julie said. âOne of us could call them. That way if theyâre close enough, weâll hear their phone ring.â
Abby shook her head. âWonât work. Iâm pretty sure theyâre smart enough to turn their phones off if theyâre going into stealth mode.â
âSo what do you suggest?â Sasha asked.
âWe have to go with your idea.â Abby shrugged. âItâs either that or sleep out here tonight and you guys know I love you, but I donât do camping.â
Julie agreed. âOkay, first thing then is to find our way out of here. Sasha, do you have any idea which way?â
With renewed determination, Sasha retraced their footsteps and though it took longer than she would have liked, they finally made it out of the maze.
âIâll go first,â Sasha said, âand make sure the path and kitchen are clear. Then Iâll come back for you.â
âAnd if you donât come back?â Julie asked.
âThen you know one of them found me and youâre on your own.â
âFair enough. Letâs do this thing.â Abby nodded. âGood luck.â
Sasha wasnât sure why her heart pounded the way it did. Seriously, she told herself, the worst she could do was run into Cole. But that didnât exactly help matters. She peeked out the exit of the maze and scanned the short distance to the house. It looked clear.
She gave Julie and Abby a thumbs-up and darted to the kitchen
