Tiffany.
Laura waited for everyone to gather, then told them all for the last time that she didnât write it, and she didnât know who did.
âIt has to be someone who knows about Pig City,â said Kristin.
âYolanda!â declared Debbie. âBecause of what we did to her.â
âMaybe,â said Laura. âBut she didnât find out until just before class started. I donât know if she had time.â
âHow about Karen?â said Tiffany. âShe knows about us, too. And we wouldnât let her join.â
âYolanda or Karen could have told somebody else,â said Aaron. âIt could be anybody.â
âIt doesnât have to be somebody who knows anything about us,â said Nathan. âI mean, Lauraâs been writing stuff about pigs every day. Maybe itâs just someone whoâs sick of seeing how great pigs are. I mean ââ
âSpit it out,â said Debbie.
âWhatever happened with Gabriel?â asked Tiffany.
âMr. Doyle might have written it,â said Laura.
âMr. Doyle?â they all said together.
âYes, Mr. Doyle,â Laura answered. âHeâs trying to trick me into admitting that Iâm the one whoâs been writing all the pig messages, by making me deny that I wrote âPigs Stink.ââ
âThat makes sense,â said Nathan.
âNot to me it doesnât,â said Kristin.
âI want to know what Gabriel knows,â said Tiffany.
âWhy Gabriel?â asked Aaron.
âLaura was going to ask him to join,â Tiffany explained. âEach of us was supposed to ask a boy. I asked Nathan, Allison asked you, and Laura was supposed to ask Gabriel.â
âI told you,â said Laura. âI changed my mind.â
âBut you never said why,â said Tiffany.
âYes, she did,â said Allison. âShe said she hated him.â
âBut she said that before, too,â Tiffany pointed out.
âIt could have been Gabriel,â Laura admitted. âIt could have been like Nathan said. Gabriel got tired of seeing all the pig messages, so he changed âPigs Thinkâ to âPigs Stinkâ because he thought it was funny.â
âThatâs right!â exclaimed Nathan. âThatâs what I said. Or at least what I meant to say.â
âWell in that case, it could be anybody,â said Tiffany.
âIt could even have been one of us,â Nathan whispered.
They looked at each other suspiciously.
Laura wondered about Debbie. There was something about Debbie that bothered her. She remembered how Debbie knew Yolandaâs note was written to Jonathan before anyone told her.
âLook!â exclaimed Kristin.
Everyone turned.
Yolanda and Jonathan were walking across the playground together,
holding hands

âNathanâs so cute,â said Tiffany. âEvery time he sees me, he touches his nose with his fist.â
âSo, we all do that,â said Allison.
âBut Nathanâs so cuuute!â said Tiffany.
Laura and Allison laughed. They were walking home from school. The Mystery of the Altered Message was never solved.
âDo you think Yolanda did it on purpose?â Laura asked.
âWhat do you mean?â asked Allison.
âRemember Debbie said that Yolandaâs been in love with Jonathan since the fourth grade. Then yesterday, Karen said Yolanda
told
her to ask me if she could join Pig City. Yolanda knew what would happen.â
âShe knew youâd put her note in Jonathanâs desk,â said Allison. âShe wanted you to do it!â She covered her mouth with her hand, then took it away. âRemember how quickly she chose Jonathan?â
âShe might have done it all on purpose,â said Laura, âwithout even realizing she was doing it.â
âOoh, I just got a chill down my back,â said Tiffany. âItâs
