âIâve got plans.â
He feigned alarm. âWhat plans?â
âLie back, Lennie, and donât ask so many questions.â
* * *
In the morning they surfaced just before noon, automatically reaching for each other as if it were the most natural move in the world.
Outside, the sun attempted to break through the closed shades, and a dog barked incessantly.
They made love again, slowly, languorously, and when they were finally finished Lennie said, âWhat would the love of my life like to do today?â
Lucky stretched and smiled. âTake a shower with you. Take a walk along the beach with you. And then come straight back to bed without passing go.â
âIt sounds like the perfect day to me,â he replied with a grin. âOnly how about we cut out the shower and the walk?â
âDonât you think we need the exercise?â she asked innocently.
âI have exercises for you even Jane Fonda doesnât know!â
âYou do?â
âIâll be your personal instructor.â
âSounds good to me.â
It wasnât until later that they began to talk. Lennie had his usual list of complaints about the movie, and Lucky listened quietly, hugging to herself the knowledge that soon she was going to make everything OK.
âI write new dialogue, the asshole director says great â fantastic stuff, Lennie. And then he doesnât want to shoot it. I go to the dailies â I give my suggestions â they ignore âem. Jesus H. Christ, theyâre getting my input for free â youâd think theyâd run with it, right?â
She nodded her agreement, stroking his back, lightly massaging his neck.
He lay face down on the bed, completely relaxed for the first time in weeks. Lucky was the only woman in the world who was able to draw every bit of tension out of him and make him feel this good.
âWeâve got to think of a way to get you out of this contract,â she said.
He admitted defeat. âAs usual you were right. Iâm gonna talk to my lawyer.â
âHold off until
Macho Man
is finished.
Thatâs
the time to make a move.â
âYeah, I guess so. How come youâre always right?â
She laughed. ââCause Iâm Ginoâs daughter anâ he taught me good.â
âPretty damn good.â
â
Very
good â and donât you forget it, husband.â
He rolled over and grabbed her in a hug. âSo â the big question. When are you coming to Acapulco? I need you there like immediately.â
Now came the crunch. She took a deep breath. âUh, Lennie, Iâve been meaning to talk to you about Acapulco.â
âWhat?â he asked suspiciously.
âDonât get mad,â she warned.
âWhat?â he repeated more forcefully.
She began the carefully rehearsed speech sheâd planned. âThereâs a huge business deal in Japan I have to take care of. If all goes as it should Iâll be out of there in a couple of weeks, and then Iâll stop off and see Bobby in London, maybe spend a few days at the office in New York. After that, Iâm all yours.â
His tone was bleak. âYouâve
got
to be kidding.â
âIâm not.â
âLucky,â he exclaimed vehemently, âyou promised me Acapulco.â
âIâll be there,â she lied.
âWhen?â he asked accusingly.
âAs soon as I can.â
Angrily he sat up. âI donât fucking believe this.â
âIâm not exactly thrilled myself. But the Japanese are very particular when it comes to deal-making.â She reached for a cigarette. âOh, sure, I could send one of the heads of the company â but itâs me they want. Something to do with honour. The owner of their company will only deal with the owner of
our
company â and until Bobby and Brigette reach a legal age, thatâs me. This is an enormous deal
