had no choice,â she added quickly. âHe practically blackmailed me.â
âBlackmailed? With what material?â She wiggled her eyebrows. âHave you been holding out on a delicious secret?â
âOf course not.â Except the kiss, but she couldnât very well tell her that. âIt was Richard. I didnât want him to see us speaking, and Mr. Middleton used it against me. Iâm not quite certain why he asked me to go riding with him.â
âPerhaps youâve captured him with your charms.â
Claudia released an unladylike snort. âThat must be it,â she said dryly. âBe serious, Poppy. Iâm in a dreadful situation.â
âHow is it remotely dreadful when a man that looks and charms like Derrick Middleton is paying attention to you?â Poppy released a tiny shriek and brought her hand to her mouth. â Oh ! Heâs courting you.â
âShhh! Not so loud. He is doing no such thing.â Claudia winced and leaned closer to her friend. âHe claims that heâs courting me, but it simply cannot be the truth.â
âWhy not?â
âHonestly, Poppy. Have you seen him? What on earth would a man like that want with me?â
âThereâs no reason why every man on earth wouldnât want you.â
âYou are biased because you are my friend.â
âI am biased and I am your friend, but Iâm also being truthful. There is not one single reason I can think of as to why Derrick Middleton or any other man wouldnât want to court you.â
Claudia opened her mouth to speak, but Poppy cut her off.
âUnlessâ¦â Poppy frowned.
âUnless what?â Claudia asked.
âIt could be your father.â
âMy father? What does my father have to do with anything?â
âYour father isnât exactly warm and inviting, Claudia. Perhaps men are afraid of him, and that is why Richard is your only suitor.â She raised one finger. âUntil now. I think itâs splendid.â
Claudia rolled her eyes. âYou would.â
âNobody said you have to marry him. Although given the choice between Richard and Derrickâ¦Look at it this way, perhaps a little competition will spur Richard into action.â
âHeavens no. I donât want Richard or anyone else knowing that Mr. Middleton is playing this charade. But I do want to spur Richard into action as you say.â
âHow are you going to do that?â
âIâm not certain.â
âI cannot for the life of me understand why Richard is dragging his feet. He has your fatherâs permission and yours. What is he waiting on?â
âHow should I know? Maybe he doesnât want to marry me.â
âThatâs rubbish.â
âThe waiting is not sitting well with my father either. I canât be certain, but I believe he instructed me to seduce Richard.â
âHe did no such thing!â Poppy said incredulously.
âI believe that is precisely what he meant when he said, âClaudiaââshe deepened her voiceââuse what God gave you.â And when I asked for clarification, he boldly proclaimed, âYour womanly wiles.ââ
âHe said that? âYour womanly wilesâ?â
Claudia giggled.
âI canât believe he said that. As far as my father is concerned, I have no womanly wiles,â Poppy said. She made a face and shook her head. âWhat a horrible conversation to have with oneâs father. How embarrassing.â
Embarrassing was right. It had been. Humiliating too. Poppyâs father had it right. He encouraged his daughter to marry, but not in a dishonorable or deceitful way. Thatâs the way itshould be, wasnât it? Whose father encouraged his daughter to seduce men?
Only hers apparently.
She would try to encourage Richard to propose, but she wouldnât put herself in a compromising situation to ensnare him.
