itâs going to happen. You canât make it happen. And out of respect for her, you should let her settle down and not pressure her.â
Ray was so level-headed and persuasive that Solomon fought himself and did not reach out. Maybe sheâd be disappointed that he didnât, he reasoned. Maybe sheâd even call or text him.
A day went by, then two, and Solomon found himself falling into the mode of a political candidate who had to concede defeat on election night. He called Ray.
âAt this point, I feel like itâs not going to happen,â he said. âI donât really know how to pursue a woman, anyway. I mean, I do, but I havenât done a lot of that. Havenât had to.â
âWell, maybe thatâs the problem,â Ray said. âYouâve gotten away with so much, including not pursuing women, that now when you want toâwhen you need toâyou actually donât knowhow. Whatâs wrong with that picture? Real talk: I changed my mind. If you want her, youâre going to have to go get her. Clearly, sheâs not going to break unless you break her.â
Rayâs words again influenced Solomon.
âYou know what?â he said to Ray. âThis is the hard, cold realityâI want her.â
âThen you have no dilemma. You understand what has to be done,â Ray said. âAnd I know how to do it.â
âYeah, okay,â Solomon said.
âIâm serious,â Ray said.
âHow?â
âGerald,â Ray answered. âThatâs your in.â
Something sounded underhanded about thatâbut thatâs what also made it so intriguing.
âYo, I didnât know you were that conniving,â Solomon said to his friend. âIs that the right way to go about it, really?â
âYou know why itâs the right way to go about it? Because you already like the kid. You already wanted to help him. You told me that you called him âMoneyâ because he reminded you of you. You connected to the boy. So being a mentor to him is simply doing what youâve already wanted to doâeven before you realized who his mom was.
âAnd you also said Michele was happy that a man was influencing her son. Sheâll put her feelings aside to help her son. Watch.â
Solomon nodded his head in agreement. He needed a pep talk to renew his pursuit. Ray delivered.
âHello?â Michele answered into her cell phone.
âHey. This is Solomon. Solomon Singletary. Remember me?â
âCanât say that I do,â she answered. âRefresh my memory.â
âIâm the guy you should let take your son to the Hawksâ game on Thursday.â
âOh, I donât know about that.â That was her first instinct. Even if Solomon did not have the history he created, Michele would have been guarded about letting Gerald go somewhere without her. With Solomon, she was doubly leery.
âI wouldnât let anything happen to him; except making sure he has a great time,â Solomon said. âYou have my cell number; you can call me at any time to check on him. Iâll put him on the phone.
âItâll be a great experience for him. And I think I can arrange for him to meet Kobe Bryant.â
Again, Solomon pushed a button with Michele. Kobe Bryant was her sonâs favorite player. Shoot, he was Micheleâs favorite player. She thought: How could I deny my child a chance like that?
âSolomon, I donât want to have to kill you. You know thatâs my baby. Heââ
âI understand, I understand,â he said, cutting her off. âIâm not ready to die, so Iâll make sure heâs good. I promise. Itâll be fine.â
âHeâs going to be so excited.â
He gave her the details and she gave him directions to her house to pick up Gerald. In the three days before the game, Solomon did not contact Michele. He did not contact
