vanished, and thatâs a fact. We may find him and we may not.
âErik had some weird experiences. He has told me of them. He has met at least one very beautiful woman from the Other Sideââ
âAre you kidding?â
âI am serious. And a warning, Officer. If you meet her, leave her alone or you will die.â
âShe is a Poison Woman,â Kawasi said. âI believe there are six now.â
âA Poison Woman?â
âThe story seems to be that such women are impregnated with poison to which they are immune, but which will kill any man who touches them. Sexually, I mean. Iâve heard such stories in the Middle East and India.â
âKind of takes the fun out of things, doesnât it?â Gallagher glanced at Kawasi. âDo you believe that?â
âI do.â
He shook his head. âWell, youâve got her convinced, anyway.â
âI told him,â Kawasi said. âI warned him as I warn you. She belongs to The Hand.â
âThe âHandâ?â
âHe who rules is called The Hand.â
Gallagher stared at her. âI donât know what to believe. I started out buying part of this, anyway, but nowâ¦well, I donât know.â
âIt is true,â Kawasi said.
âYou believe in this Third World?â Gallagher asked skeptically. âYou really believe in it?â
She was very cool, and very beautiful. âI believe in it. I have to believe in it. I have lived there all my life until now.â
Chapter 9
----
G ALLAGHER STARED AT her for a moment. Then his attention shifted to Raglan. âIâd better deal with something Iâm fitted for.
âThat man, now? The one who came into your condo? You got anything more than his height and weight? And that he was a âprofessionalââwhatever that means?â
âYouâre a professional, Gallagher, in your way. He was a professional, too. As to description: He had a scar, maybe two inches long, on his right jawbone. His ears were flat and close-set, not much in the way of lobes. His hairline was lowâif it wasnât a hairpiece, and I doubt it was. His skin color was a little darker than Kawasiâs and his eyes were smallerâa strong-boned, rather hard face, fleshy over the cheekbones.â
âYouâre pretty good,â Gallagher said. He made some notes, then glanced up at Raglan. âIf you figure on going out to that mesa where Hokart was building, be careful. When you turn off the highway youâll be on your own.â
He turned to Kawasi. âIâm not buyinâ what you say, meaning no disrespect. Itâs pretty far-out, youâve got to admit that, but letâs suppose what you say is true. Whatâs it like over there?â
âLike here, but different. The sun isâ¦is not the same. It is like sun shining through mist. There are many green fields, many meadows, all watered by ditches.â
Gallagher got up. âYou going down there? To where Hokart was building?â
âI think so.â
âWhere else?â
âIâll be there, here, at Tamarron, or en route, but Iâm not looking for trouble. I do want to find him and get him out of any trouble he might be in.â
âBe careful.â Gallagher started away. âPoison Woman? Boy, thatâs a new one!â
âVery old, actually. The story was that if a king wanted to get rid of a rival he just made him a present of such a girl. After that, no trouble.â
Gallagher shrugged. âWell, if you got to goâ¦â
When he was gone, Kawasi looked at Mike. âWho he is?â
âThe law. Heâs an officer. Investigates crimes, things like the fire. Donât underrate him. I think heâs a very smart, very cagey young man.â
âHe is good?â
âI think so. And capable.â
âHe did not believe me.â
Raglan waved his hand around. âNone of them
