like cutting clean through a dark sea. The stone pulsed against her palm. She cried out in surprise, and then in delight, reaching out as if she could snatch one of the stars that shone around her.
Fearless, Flynn thought, even now, Or perhaps it was more a thirst for all the times sheâd denied herself a drink. When she turned her face to his, her eyes brighter than the jewels, brighter than the stars, he spun her in dizzying circles.
They landed in a laughing tumble to roll over the soft cushion of grass by the side of his blue waterfall.
âOh! That was amazing. Can we do it again?â
âSoon enough. Here.â He lifted a hand, and a plump peach balanced on the tips of his fingers. âYou havenât eaten your supper.â
âI wasnât hungry before.â Charmed, she took the peach, bit into the sweetness. âSo many stars,â she murmured, lying back again to watch them. âWere we really flying up there?â
âItâs a kind of manipulation of time and space and matter. Itâs magic. Thatâs enough, isnât it?â
âItâs everything. The worldâs magic now.â
âBut youâre cold,â he said when she shivered.
âMmm. Only a little.â Even as she spoke, the air warmed, almost seemed to bloom.
âI confess it.â He leaned over to kiss her. âI stole a bit of warmth from here and there. But I donât think anyone will miss it. I donât want you chilled.â
âCan it always be like this?â
There was a hitch in his chest. âIt can be what we make it. Do you miss what was before?â
âNo.â But she lowered her lashes, so he was unable to read her eyes. âDo you? I mean, the people you knew? Your family?â
âTheyâve been gone a long time.â
âWas it hard?â She sat up, handed him the peach. âKnowing youâd never be able to see them again, or talk to them, or even tell them where you were?â
âI donât remember.â But he did. This was the first lie heâd told her. He remembered that the pain of it had been like death.
âIâm sorry.â She touched his shoulder. âIt hurts you.â
âIt fades.â He pushed away, got to his feet. âAll of that is beyond, and it fades. Itâs the illusion, and this is all thatâs real. All that matters. All that matters is here.â
âFlynn.â She rose, hoping to comfort, but when he spun back, his eyes were hot, bright. And the desire in them robbed her of breath.
âI want you. A hundred lifetimes from now Iâll want you. Itâs enough for me. Is it enough for you?â
âIâm here.â She held out her hands. âAnd I love you. Itâs more than I ever dreamed of having.â
âI can give you more. You still have a boon.â
âThen Iâll keep it. Until I need more.â Because heâd yet to take her offered hands, she cupped his face in them.âIâve never touched a man like this. With love and desire. Do you think, Flynn, that because Iâve never felt them before I donât understand the wonder of knowing them now? Of feeling them now for one man? Iâve watched my mother search all of her life, be willing to risk heartbreak for the chanceâjust the chanceâof feeling what I do right at this moment. Sheâs the most important person to me outside this world youâve made. And I know sheâd be thrilled to know what Iâve found with you.â
âThen when you ask me for your heartâs desire, Iâll move heaven and earth to give it to you. Thatâs my vow.â
âI have my heartâs desire.â She smiled, stepped back. âTell me yours.â
âNot tonight. Tonight I have plans for you that donât involve conversation.â
âOh? And what might they be?â
âWell, to beginâ¦â
He lifted a hand and
