quiet.â
I reached into my pocket and pulled out three pounds and eighty-nine pence. âWhat, with this? Because this is all I have left out of my allowance, and itâs only Wednesday. I donât think itâll cut much sway with a millionaireâs daughter, do you?â
Nydia looked at the coins languishing in my palm. âWhat about your trust fund?â she said.
âNo way, José,â I replied. âI canât touch it. And anyway, Anne-Marie would neverââ
âI know!â Nydiaâs eyes lit up, and I could see the worst had happened. Sheâd had one of her mad plans again, the kind you canât get her to leave aloneâthe kind that always, always gets us into trouble. Only this time I had the feeling she was going to surpass herself.
âYou said your mum is feeling guilty, right? And your dad too? Well, weâll find out what Anne-Marie wantsâa mobile phone that can take photos or a PSP or somethingâand then get them to buy it for you and then weâll give it to her. Easy peasy.â
I thought for a moment. âI donât know,â I said. âThey feel bad, but â¦oh, Nydia, this plan is ridiculous! Itâs never going to work. Anne-Marie wonât help us, even for a cool mobile phone. And even if she would, my mum would never buy me one. You know what sheâs like about me being normal! Anyway, it doesnât seem very fair to Mum or Dad to rip them off like that.â
Nydia took both my hands in hers. âHave they been fair to you?â
I shook my head, the bleak reality of what was waiting for me at home surging back for a second. All these plans, all this excitement over Justin: It was mad and silly, but it was betterâ anything was betterâthan thinking about that . I boxed up all thoughts of home and shoved them to the back of my mind.
âAnd besides,â Nydia continued, âit would only be a one-off. Itâs not as if youâd do it every week. You deserve to get something out of all this, Ruby, donât you?â
I nodded uncertainly. The only thing I really wanted was my family back the way it always had been. But I couldnât have that, so Iâd just have to be tough. It was the only way to get through it.
âHave you got a better idea?â Nydia asked pointedly. I shook my head.
âAnd do you want to be able to kiss Justin so well that heâll be blown away at what might be your only chance?â
My heart plummeted. But it was no good. I just couldnât do it.
âI canât,â I said. âI just canât get Mum and Dad to buy me something to give to Anne-Marie. Even if I donât like them much at the moment. Iâm sorry, Nyds.â
Nydia squeezed my wrist and thought for a second longer. âYes, you can,â she said excitedly. âAnd you donât even need your mum and dad to do it. Youâve got the one thing that Anne-Marie wants more than anything else.â
I looked confused. âWhat? A bra the size of a battleship?â
âNo, silly. Fame. Youâve got fame and she hates that.
If you told her that you could maybe help her get a part on the show â¦â
âBut I canât,â I protested. âIâm barely holding on to my own part.â
Nydia shook her head quickly. âYes, I know that, and you know that. But she doesnât , does she? Sheâd go for it. I bet she would. She dyed her hair orange to try to get the lead in Annie . If sheâd do that, sheâd do anything.â
I nodded. âMaybe â¦â I said. Maybe I was overtired and overwrought, but Nydiaâs plan did have a mad kind of logic to it. And so what if it would mean lying to Anne-Marie? Itâs not as if sheâd ever been anything but nasty to me.
Nydia was looking pleased with herself. âWell then,â she said, âall we have to do is just call Anne-Marie and weâll see what
