Walter and every other boy you claimed to love?â
âAnd youâve been there for us,â Angel added. âAngelica loves you. We just donât want you to lose sight of our friendship.â
Camille started tearing up. âYou guys,â she sniffed, âI will never forget that youâre my true friends. Why canât you understand that?â
âBecause actions speak louder than words,â Jasmine said, a lot more gently than Iâd ever expected.
Once Camille stopped being so defensive, we were actually able to have a productive conversation. I was happy to see weâd stopped fighting and were just talking right now. After fifteen minutes, Camille finally said, âJust so you guys know, Iâll do better.â
Just then Miss Rachel poked her head back in the door. âAre you girls good?â
I waited on someone else to answer, since I was always positive. Tyeesha was the first one. âIâm good!â she exclaimed.
Rachel smiled. âWe know youâre good. What about the rest of you?â
Still no one spoke. âIâm good,â I finally said.
âMe, too,â Angel added.
Jasmine shrugged like she didnât really care. I knew that was just her putting her wall up. Jasmine didnât like people treating her wrong, so she was going to carry an attitude a little longer than everyone else.
âIâm good,â Camille said, finally breaking out into a wide smile. âAnd I promise I wonât get the big head.â
âAgain?â Jasmine asked.
âAgain,â Camille answered. I relaxed as everyone broke out in a smile . . . including Jasmine.

âSo what do you think, Alexis?â
âHuh?â I said, snapping out of my thoughts. Camille had been going on and on for what seemed like an hour now. We were sitting at our regular table in the cafeteria. Camille had started talking right after the bell had rung, and she hadnât shut up since.
I glanced down at my watch. It actually had been only twenty minutes. But my mind definitely wasnât on her drama right now. Granted, I understood that she was going through some things, but so was I. My dad hadnât come home last night, which was pretty major. When Iâd asked my mom if he was out of townâthe only time he spent the night away from homeâsheâd simply run into her room crying.
My home life was so miserable. And Camille was going on and on about Xavier.
â . . . I mean, I know why he was mad about the kiss, so Iâll give him that, but he didnât have to go talking like I could never measure up to Beyoncé.â
âYeah,â I mumbled halfheartedly.
âWhat is wrong with you?â Camille finally asked.
âIâm sorry, Iâm just kinda out of it,â I replied. I looked around the cafeteria. âWhereâs Jasmine and Angel?â
âJasmine had study hall. Angel had to leave early because Angelica is sick,â she said.
âOh,â I sighed heavily. âWhereâs Tyeesha?â
Camille shrugged and gave me a look like she couldnât care less.
âCamille, you really should give Tyeesha a chance. Sheâs cool.â
âSheâs all right, especially since I know she wasnât trying to talk to Xavier. Iâm just not as tight with her as you guys are.â
âMaybe weâre tight with her because weâre giving her a chance.â I wanted to remind Camille that she also didnât know Tyeesha because she was never around, but I didnât feel like going there. âSpeak of the devil,â I said as Tyeesha walked toward us, carrying her lunch tray.
âHey, hey, hey,â she sang. âWhatâs up?â For all the drama she went through at home, she sure had a good attitude. I made a mental note to ask her about it later.
âHey, girl. Where were you?â I asked.
âI had to take
