was a good-looking woman, she felt an uncomfortable undercurrent of something.
After bussing one anotherâs cheeks, Liz asked how Phoebe liked Georgetown. âWhatâs not to like,â Isabel said, âbut thanks for asking. She seems to be adjusting pretty well. Surprisingly well, in fact. And Skyla?â Though tempted to ask how the heck sheâd gotten in, Isabel refrained.
âSheâs in love with the place. Especially the fact that there are four grades of boys. Can you believe that?â She arched her brow and released a boisterous laugh.
âKids!â Isabel said with a tight smile, already wondering how to extricate herself.
âI told her, âyouâd better hit the books, kiddo; this isnât Woodmont.ââ She laughed again.
âYouâre right about that,â Isabel said and glanced around in search of Ron.
âBy the way, Skyla mentioned something about a joint birthday party. Wouldnât that be fun?â Liz said, her eyes wide with anticipation.
For the second time this evening, Isabel tried hard not to appear surprised. âHmm, a joint party?â Why hadnât Phoebe said a word?
âOh, yes. Skyla came home today, all excited, even mentioned having it at the Chevy Chase Club, so Iâm guessing that was Phoebeâs idea.â
âReally? I guess Phoebe forgot to mention it. She came home a little late and I was getting ready. For this,â she said. âOh, shoot, will you forgive me, I see a couple of people I need to catch up with. Room parent duty, you know. Get to know the new parents.â
âSure, but letâs catch up soon, okay?â Liz said, clutching Isabelâs wrist. âItâs been too long. Have a glass of wine and make plans for the kidsâ party?â
Isabel slowly retracted her arm. âSure. Iâll touch base with Phoebe. Call me?â Perhaps this was Lizâs version of an olive branch, but sheâd put the ball in Lizâs court. After all, she only worked part-time, some cupcake venture, a business that seemed at best half-serious.
âIâll do that,â Liz said cheerfully and waltzed off.
Isabel imagined that getting together might not just be about patching things up or even the girlsâ party. Inevitably, talk would turn to Liz and Steve launching a second bid to join the Club, which didnât particularly bother her, but now it seemed theyâd be hosting a birthday party there too. That baffled her. Was Phoebe really ready to trust Skyla? More to the point, was she? She wasnât sure. Actually no, but maybe meeting up with Liz wasnât such a bad idea. And perhaps Phoebe should invite Skyla, so she could get a sense of the girl.
As she made her way through the clusters of people, and occasionally waved or said âhello,â she ran into Ron. âOh, there you are. Thank God.â She was about to mention her encounter with Liz when she noticed the distressed look on his face.
âListen, I have to tell you something,â he said, his voice a hoarse whisper, âand youâre not going to like it. A few kids wereââ he hesitated as if hunting for the right word, ââcaught smoking marijuana at some guyâs house in Adams Morgan today.â He grew circumspect. âI think Phoebe might know something about it.â
The afternoon came flooding back. Isabel placed a hand on Ronâs arm to steady herself. âWhat exactly would she know?â she managed.
âWell,â he said slowly, âI think she was there, along with Jessie and Emma and a few boys. The only name I recognized was Dylanâs.â
Isabel grappled with the news. So thatâs what Amanda had meant, and thatâs why people had been looking at her. They knew. Unlike me, she thought, whose daughter had actually been there. She couldnât bring herself to believe that Phoebe too had been smoking â but how had she
