questions.â
Smiling, I reached out to shake his hand. He didnât reciprocate.
âIâm Skip.â
âYou work here? Or you stealinâ food from the walk-in?â Stepping back, he folded his arms and watched for my reaction.
âStealing food?â
âCould be both. You could work here, and you could steal food. Believe me, itâs been done. Just donât steal it on my watch, okay?â
âWho are you?â
Studying me for a moment, he wiped his hands on his apron.
âMikey. Mikey Pollerno. Again, whatchu doinâ here?â
âMy friend, heâs new here, he had to come early to get something from his locker and Iââ
âHe gonna walk some meat out to his car? Not on my watch. There be no food stealinâ today.â
âNobodyâs walking any food out of here, okay?â
âDamn straight. Thereâre two locks on the walk-in. Two padlocks. Ainât nobody walkinâ free food.â A grin broke out on his face. âUnless itâs me.â
âYou take food?â
âNo. Come on, man. Itâs a joke. No way. Two locks on thecooler. And Marty and Chef Jean? They donât trust nobody. Understand? Nobody. Sophia had âem install cameras, dude. Three of them security things mounted outside the locker, just waitinâ for you to walk some food out the door.â
I was thoroughly confused.
âIâm messinâ with you, dude. You couldnât take the food if you wanted. Although, some people try when the walk-in open. Steaks, lobster, scallops, they have a way of just disappearinâ. So now, locks and cameras.â
I hadnât considered taking anything. My mission was to get information.
âSo, lots of excitement here a couple of nights ago.â
âYeah. Your friend, he takes the Wright girlâs place?â
I was the one who was supposed to be asking the questions.
âWhat exactly happened?â
âThe girl was cut up. Out in the alley. You donât know? Like a side of beef, man. Pretty nasty stuff.â
âYeah, yeah, I know. I just wondered why?â
I found myself almost shouting over the loud music.
Mikey smiled. âOh, there could be lots of reasons. Boyfriendââ
âDid she have a boyfriend?â
Glancing around the room, he said, âI got to get these tables wiped down and set. Cloths, candles, flowers.â
âYeah. Big job. Did Amanda have a boyfriend? Somebody who worked in the kitchen?â
âLook, man, I dinât know her. Thereâs talk, you know. And why are you so interested?â
Why was I interested? I manufactured a reason that wasnât far from the truth. âI told you, my friend is working back there. Iâm looking out for him. I guess I wanted to know if itâs dangerous.â
âIs he gonna piss people off? Is he gonna promote himselfwhere he shouldnât be promotinâ? Is he gonna play like his shit donât stink?â
âThatâs why she was killed?â
He stared at me.
âIs that what she was like?â
âI donât know nothinâ. Okay?â
âHey, Iâm just asking. I heard one of the cooks say that maybe she was seeing Joaquin Vanderfield.â
His eyes narrowed and he took a step back.
âI dinât say that. Who would say that? What goes on in that kitchen I donât know nothinâ about.
Yo no sé nada
.â
It was the second time Iâd heard that phrase in the last two days. I know nothing.
âJust wondered.â
âMaybe you shouldnât wonder so much,â he paused and then turned away, picking up his rag and a spray bottle, and moving to the next table. The conversation was obviously over.
As I walked back into the kitchen, I wondered if Iâd received a veiled threat. Or maybe I was just being paranoid. The walls echoed with Alley Boyâs âGonna Rob Me a Nigga.â I couldnât
