do.â
Cathar paused and considered. âWhat will you do, then?â
âWe need the Sword of Angesand and the power it will bring. Once that power is seated again here in the kingdom, I will have a bit of leeway to investigate. I must go and hurry Adhémar along. Iâve heard nothing from him since he left.â He scowled. âI wonder if heâs actually making a search, or simply searching out all the alehouses between here and Melksham Island.â
Cathar laughed. âAye, I wonder as well. Surely he should have sent some sort of message by now.â
âMy thought as well.â
âSo,â Cathar said, taking a final drink of his ale, âwhen will you go?â
âTonight.â
âTonight is almost over, little brother.â
âThen Iâd best hurry,â Miach said with a smile. âYouâll hold things together while Iâm gone, wonât you?â
âMe?â Cathar asked in surprise. âBut Adhémar left Turah on the throne.â
âSo he did,â Miach said.
Cathar looked at him evenly. âThat would be treason, Miach.â
Miach returned his look. âClap me in irons, then.â
âI imagine I canât.â
âI imagine you canât either,â Miach agreed.
Cathar frowned. âYou know, in the hands of the unscrupulous, this power you have could be a very dangerous thing.â
âHence the refining fire that makes a mage into an archmage,â Miach said easily. âI would be nothing but ashes if I hadnât passed the test.â
âThen your heart is pure?â
âI wouldnât go that far,â Miach said dryly, âbut I am loyal to the crown.â
âTo the crown, or the king?â
Miach paused for several moments before he could manage a reply. âI think you wouldnât care for the answer.â
âTreason,â Cathar breathed. âAnd this time Iâm serious.â
Miach shook his head. âNay, Cathar, I will be loyal to the king, the crown, and the realm, and I certainly have no plans to undermine any of the three. Regardless of what I think personally.â
Cathar shook his head slowly. âMiach, it is no wonder Adhémar does not sleep well. I think you worry him.â
âI likely should,â Miach said with a sigh. âI think I should go now. You will see to things while Iâm gone? If Turah makes a poor decision, go behind him and remedy it, wonât you?â
âAnd find my head on a pike outside the gate when Adhémar finds out what Iâve done.â
âHe wonât find out because neither you nor I will tell him. Youâll make certain the kingdom stays safe and Iâll make haste.â
âYou do that,â Cathar said. He paused, then looked at Miach seriously. âBe careful.â
âI always am.â He rose and stretched. âIâll continue to watch the borders while Iâm away. I think I can manage that, at least.â He put his hand on Catharâs shoulder. âPut the fire out before you leave, would you?â
Cathar blinked in surprise. âYouâre going now ?â
âIs there a better time?â
âBut supplies . . . a horse ...â
âI wonât need them.â
âMiach, youâll need food. At least take a bow and arrow for hunting.â
âI wonât need those either. Iâll just use my talons.â
Cathar shuddered. âI detest it when you shapechange. How can you bear it?â
âFlying is faster than riding,â Miach said. He walked to the door. âIâll return as quickly as I can.â
âHow will I reach you?â Cathar called after him.
âYou wonât.â
Miach pulled the door closed behind him, then loped down a single flight of his twisting stairs. He exited through a doorway that led him out onto the battlements. He paused to make certain all his spells were as
