brother.
âThinking about Kurt?â Carter asked.
His boss was astute. âYeah.â
âSometimes thatâs not a bad thing, especially if itâs a good memory.â
He looked over at Carter. âI guess so.â
âYou ever want to talk about it, you know Iâm right here.â
âThanks.â That was the problem. He never wanted to talk about it. Because talking about it, or even thinking about it, made him remember Kurt. And even if they were good memories, they inevitably led down the road to the bad ones.
âFood is ready,â Logan said. âLetâs take it inside.â
Bradyâs stomach grumbled, and he had to admit he was more than eager to eat, especially if it meant no more conversation about his brother.
They all gathered inside and scooped up piles of barbecued chicken and more side dishes than Brady could count. He had potato salad, beans, corn on the cob, and coleslaw, along with garlic breadâat least to start. There was seating inside and outside, so he found Megan and they decided on a spot at one of the large picnic tables outside with several of the other couples.
âWhen Bash and I have kids, weâre having all girls,â Chelsea said.
Bash rolled his eyes. âFirst, honey, letâs get through the wedding. And second, I intend to have all sons.â
Chelsea let out a snort. âWeâll see who wins.â
âWhat about you and Carter, Molly?â
She shrugged. âI donât care. Weâre really in no hurry for the baby thing.â
Carter leaned over and nuzzled her neck, giving her a kiss. âRight now weâre too busy practicing.â
Molly laughed. âCarter.â
Megan adored seeing her friends so in love.
She turned to Brady. âAnd how about you, Brady? Boys or girls for you?â
âI donât intend to have kids.â
âEver?â
âNo.â
âCare to elaborate?â
âNot really.â
She could tell he wasnât in the mood for an in-depth discussion on children. âWell, you know, your opinion on that might change. Maybe you havenât found the right person yet. And when you do, you might want to have ten babies with her.â
He shot her a look she couldnât define, then asked, âIs that how youâll feel when you find the right guy?â
âAbsolutely. Once you find that right person, itâs all about biology. Right now kids arenât on my radar, but Iâve seen it happen with quite a few of my friends who thought theyâd never get married or theyâd never have or want children. Then suddenly theyâre in love and theyâre getting married and theyâre having a baby. Itâs the love mind-set.â
He cocked his head to the side. âThe love mind-set.â
She slanted a smile at him. âYes. You fall in love, and you can see yourself with that person for the rest of your life, and suddenly you want something thatâs a part of both of you.â
Brady took a bite of chicken, chewed, and swallowed. âMy mind-set wonât change. This world is hard, and I wonât bring kids into it.â
That sounded rather definite. Megan sighed. âThen I guess you and I can never be, because I want a whole lot of kids.â
Again he gave her that look she couldnât defineâa mix of curiosity and maybe a little sadness?
âI guess not,â he said.
âOh, come on, you two,â Chelsea said. âI never in a million years thought Bash and I would end up together and have plans to get married in less than a year. Let alone talking about someday having babies.â
âSomeday very soon,â Bash added.
Chelsea grinned, then smoothed her hand down his face. âYes. Someday soon. It just goes to show you that what you think right this moment could change by tomorrow.â
âThis is true,â Megan said.
But Brady shook his head. âYeah, my
