hardly any pushing from her two older sisters. Claire, on the other hand, looked right at home. She cast appraising glances at every man she saw, and gave more careful looks to the male doctors. The men looked back at her. Thea wondered what Claire would be like if she werenât so beautiful, and then realized she wouldnât be Claire. Claire was her beauty. She was all magnificent exterior.
âThis is Ginaâs ward,â Thea whispered. âCome on. Letâs go over so you can meet her.â
âThrillsville,â Claire muttered, but she led Sybil to the bed that Thea pointed them to.
âGina, hi, how are you?â Thea asked.
âIâm okay,â Gina said. Thea noticed how listless she looked, and how small in comparison to Sybil. This was the Gina who was dying, not the twelve-year-old Gina Thea was used to.
âI brought you some visitors,â Thea declared. âGina, I want you to meet two of my sisters, Claire and Sybil.â
Gina pulled herself up in her bed, and Thea rearranged her pillows to give her some support. âReally?â Gina said. âTheyâre really Claire and Sybil?â
âWhat do you think, that sheâd hire ringers?â Claire asked. âThea doesnât have that kind of imagination. Hi, Gina. Iâm Claire.â
âAnd Iâm Sybil,â Sybil said. She extended her hand for Gina to shake. Thea noticed it was shaking, and gave Sybil five extra points for bravery.
âI canât believe youâre really here,â Gina said. âTheaâs told me so much about you, and Iâve wanted to meet you, and now youâre actually here.â
âWe wanted to meet you, too,â Claire said. âThea hasnât talked about anyone else since the two of you became friends.â
Thea couldnât believe what she was hearing. Claire was being nice. Where was the catch?
âI like her so much,â Gina said. âYouâre so lucky to have a sister like her.â
âWe know,â Sybil said. At least Claire didnât agree. Thea was starting to worry that Claire herself had hired the ringer. âDo you have any sisters, Gina?â
Gina nodded. âOne,â she said. âHer name is Dani.â
âI know her,â Claire said. âWeâre not in any of the same classes, but Iâve seen her around school. Sheâs very pretty.â
âYou really know Dani?â Gina asked.
âShe probably doesnât know me,â Claire said. âIâm new to the school. We move around a lot. I donât know if you know what thatâs like, but when you go to a lot of different schools, it pays if you figure out fast whoâs important and who isnât. I guessed that Dani must be important because sheâs so pretty and popular.â
Thea balanced herself against the chair to keep from fainting.
âYou have a big brother, too, donât you?â Sybil asked. âTheaâs mentioned him to us.â
âKip,â Gina said. âHeâll be here soon. He comes every day after work to visit.â
âThatâs great,â Sybil said. âYou must be happy to see him.â
âI am,â Gina said. âBefore Thea became my Friendly Visitor, Kip was the only visitor I had. Him and my mom. Dani would come, too, but sheâs so busy with school and her friends. She means to come a lot, but then stuff happens, and she canât.â
âShe should come more often,â Claire said sharply. But then she smiled at Gina. âShe could check out all the handsome doctors if she did.â She winked broadly.
Gina laughed and was almost herself again. It hurt Thea to see how much worse Gina was than sheâd been four days earlier. Gina really was going to die. Thea began to believe what Kip kept telling her.
âI donât know why Iâm babbling this way,â Claire said. âI hear from Thea that
