womanâs help to save him. Fighting over century-old problems wasnât going to help that, so Mia bit on her pride and shook her head.
âThen back to work,â Riley said.
She clicked some buttons on her computer and a manâs face popped up. He was older and distinguished. His dark hair was down to his shoulders and slicked back; his eyes were warm and welcoming. Mia thought he was the type of man American girls dreamed of marrying.
âThis is Joseph Ruiz,â Riley said. âHe is smart, wealthy, well connected, and evil.â
She flipped to the next picture. It was a beautiful woman, several years older than Mia but not quite Rileyâs age. Her thick, shiny black hair ran down her back.
âDalmy Ruiz,â Riley said.
Mia had never heard such a name. Riley pronounced it âDoll-Meâ but that didnât match the spelling on the screen. She looked exotic. Mia thought it was fitting that Joseph had wed such a beautiful woman.
âThe pride and joy of Josephâs life,â Riley said. âHis daughter and heir to his empire.â
âSheâs too old to live with her father,â Mia said.
Riley gave her a look.
âWeâre not in America anymore,â Riley said. âMexico supports its women. She is being groomed to take over Josephâs business.â
âWhatâs an heir?â Mia asked.
Riley rolled her eyes.
âIf your father died, what would happen to your mother? His money? His land?â
âI never thought about that,â Mia said. Her cheeks grew red and she looked down.
âYour mother would go into retirement; his land and money would revert to the government, which would sell it and make even more money,â Riley said.
Mia looked up at her with wide eyes. If Riley knew this, she knew other facts about America. Mia couldnât ask another question though. Her focus needed to remain with the boys.
âIn other parts of the world it would go to the spouse, the children, or any other person the father chose,â Riley said. âThat person is called an heir.â
Riley clicked to another picture. It was an older man. He had the same dark features as the other two. He was heavier-set with cold, hard eyes.
âGeneral Bolivar,â Riley said. âYou heard about him yesterday.â
She clicked another button and the three pictures appeared next to each other.
âThese are our three key players,â Riley said. âIf you want Andrew and Carter back youâll have to work through them.â
âStrengths and weaknesses?â Mia asked.
âHmm,â Riley said. âNice question. Straight to the point. I like it.â
She took a breath.
âGeneral Bolivarâs weakness is Joseph Ruiz. Joseph Ruiz, Dalmy Ruiz. Dalmy Ruiz, none known.â
A father who cared about his daughter above all else, above money. This was a new concept for Mia, but it made the first step simple.
âHer,â Mia said. âSheâs the key to getting the rest of them.â
âAnd how will you accomplish that?â Riley asked.
âStudy her,â Mia said. âLearn what she does first.â
Riley smiled and turned back to the computer.
âYouâre right. I would make you do the legwork but since we were spotted last night I donât think thatâs necessary.â
She clicked a few buttons and Dalmyâs face took up the whole screen.
âWhat do you know about her?â Mia asked.
âNot much,â Riley said. âSheâs protected, dangerous, lives in her fatherâs house. I think sheâs in charge of the girls in the town.â
âSo why not become one of the girls in the town then?â Mia asked. âGet close to her, take her hostage, and exchange her freedom for the menâs.â
âNo,â Riley said. âToo dangerous.â
âWhatâs so dangerous about being a girl in a town?â Mia asked.
âWe
