stupid.â
âI never said you were stupid, Amber, justâ¦inexperienced.â
âWith men, she means,â Sarafina put in.
âNot so inexperienced I canât spot a con a mile away. God, do you think I believe any of this? He appears out of nowhere on a dark road and I donât sense him there? He had to be shielding.â She shook her head slowly. âIâve been mulling this over all the way out here. The onlyanswer I can come up with is that he didnât want me to see him before I hit him.â
Rhiannon blinked, glanced at Sarafina, then looked back at Amber.
âAnd that he just happened to be going to Salem? Come on, Iâd have to be a dimwit to fall for that.â
âBut you brought him here all the same,â Sarafina whispered.
Amber nodded, moving behind her to squeeze her shoulders. âYes. And Iâm sorry if it added any more tension to a situation thatâs already unbearable, Sarafina. I didnât want to make things worse for you.â
âThen why did you do it?â Rhiannon asked.
Amber met her eyes. âI thinkâ¦I was supposed to.â
âWhat do you mean?â
Sighing, Amber shook her head. âNo. Look, this is my deal, okay? Iâm not ready to talk about it, not yet. And certainly not when thereâs so much else going on.â She leaned closer to Sarafina. âDonât burden yourself worrying about this. I can handle Edge. And donât give up hope on Willem.â
Sarafina jerked her head around to stare into Amberâs eyes, then she turned her gaze on Rhiannon. âYouâre planning something, arenât you?â Amber nodded.
âAmber, donâtââ Rhiannon began.
âShe has a right to know.â Amber moved to the chair nearest Sarafinaâs, took her hands, held her eyes. âYou remember when Will saved you from Stiles and threw him from that peak into the sea?â
She nodded. âWe never found his body.â
âI donât think his body was there. Rhiannon and Iâwe think he survived.â
âBut howâ¦?â Then she blinked, and her eyes widened. âThe experiments? You think he was successful?â
âWe canât know that for sure,â Rhiannon said.
âBut weâre going to find out.â The teakettle started whistling, long and slow. Amber got up to shut it off. âThe importance of our new friend Edge and his motives for coming here pale in comparison to this.â
Rhiannon sighed. âOn that, I suppose I have to agree.â
Amber put a tea bag into her mug, poured the steaming water over it. âRhiannon is taking a sample of my blood to Eric at Wind Ridge. My parents are going to meet her there. You know Eric and his science. If thereâs anything to be found, heâll find it. Itâs just a matter of time.â
âTime.â Sarafina sighed, lowered her head. âThatâs something we donât have in abundance.â
âDante and Morgan are on their way, Sarafina,â Rhiannon said. âTheyâre going to work from this end on tracing Frank Stiles. If he is still alive, theyâll track him down. And once we know where he isâ¦â Rhiannon didnât finish. She didnât have to.
âIt might not matter,â Sarafina said softly. âEven if we found some way toâto do this thingââ
God, Amber thought. She couldnât even say it.
âIâm not sure Willem would surrender his mortality.â
Amber frowned. âIs this something youâve discussed, then?â
She shook her head. âWe try not to. Heâs so determined that we live in the momentâso determined to keep me from torturing myself by thinking about the inevitable.â Lifting her eyes, she said, âOr what we thought was inevitable.â
âThen you donât know,â Amber said. âAnd you wonât, not until you ask
