heâs really nice,â she insisted. âWhat has he done? Killed somebody?â
Juliusâs heart skipped a beat because he knew for a fact that Viper had killed someone, and that was only the victim he knew about.
Dré walked over to Denim, clearly frustrated. âDenim, heâs tied to drugs, gangs, murder. You name it, heâs done it. If your parents knew what we know, they would go ballistic.â
Denim looked at Julius and asked, âYou know about him too?â
âYeah, I know of him. Dré is right. Heâs bad news.â
Denim sat down and finally noticed the flowers in Juliusâs hands. She smiled and asked, âAre those for me?â
Julius snapped himself out of a trance and handed her the flowers. âYes, theyâre for you. I hope I didnât ruin them by squeezing the stems to death. Seeing Viper at your house kind of messed me up.â
âI didnât know,â she said as she sank down on the sofa, stunned by all the information.
âWell, now you do,â Dré replied. âAnd if he comes around again, let me know and Iâll handle it. He needs to know that heâs not wanted or needed around here.â
âDréâs right about that,â Julius added. âThere are people who want him dead. You canât afford to get caught in the cross fire. Somebody took a shot at him in a crowded restaurant yesterday.â
âYesterday?â Dré asked. âWhat time?â
âIâm not sure. It was sometime yesterday afternoon. My friend Domingo and his sister were there when it happened.â
âMaybe thatâs where he was coming from when they T-boned you,â Dré stated.
âOkay, you two,â Denim said. âCalm down. Itâs in the past now.â
Dré sat down and put his arm around the love of his life and said, âYes, it is because I donât want you nowhere near that man.â
âIâm, talking crazy,â she said as she waved Dré off. âNo, weâre going together.â
âJulius, you sure are quiet,â Dré asked. âAre you okay?â
Julius rubbed his eyes and sat down in a nearby chair and then said, âNot really.â
Concerned, Denim asked, âWhatâs wrong?â
âYeah, liâl bro, whatâs up? You know you can talk to us.â
With tears in his eyes, Julius said, âNot on this one. Itâs too deep.â
âWait a minute,â Denim said, as if a lightbulb had gone off in her head. âHas Tybo been bullying you again?â
âNah, it has nothing to do with him,â he replied. âLook, just forget I said anything.â
âA look like that is hard to forget,â Denim answered as she put her flowers in a vase filled with water. âI donât want to pressure you into talking, but if someoneâs bothering you or youâre in some kind of trouble, you need to tell someone.â
Julius smiled to try to break the tension in the room. âIâll keep that in mind, Professor.â
âSince you have jokes, donât you have a test coming up?â she asked.
âYes. Day after tomorrow,â he revealed as he stood.
âYouâd better be studying for it.â
Julius smiled and said, âI am. Dré, Iâd better be getting home. I hope you feel better soon, Denim.â
She hugged his neck and said, âI will. Thanks again for the flowers. Now, go home and study.â
Dré gave Denim a kiss and said, âIâll be back shortly. I have to run Julius home.â
Denim settled in on the sofa with her laptop and said, âTake your time.â
Â
Â
When Dré returned to Denimâs house thirty minutes later, he found Denim in the family room, still surfing the Web.
He sat down next to her and asked, âWhat are you doing?â
Without making eye contact, she said, âGoogling information on
