color.â
âBeets,â Jenna fumed. âI hate beets!â
But Fiero pointed out that the frosting overpowered their rose-petal-infused cake. âI cannot taste zee flowers,â he complained. âWhere are zay? Did zay disappear?â
Sadie went back to her team. âI think itâs anyoneâs game,â she said. âIâm not sure who will go home first.â
âI hope itâs not us,â said Lexi. âThat would be really embarrassing!â
âYou did an awesome job presenting, Sadie,â Kylie said. âYou did your best.â
âI hope my parents liked it,â she replied. âDo you think they did?â
Kylie shrugged. âThey left right after the judging.â
âThey left?â Sadie gasped. âWhy? Are they mad at me?â
âIâm not sure,â Kylie said, trying to calm her. âIâm sure itâs nothing. Maybe your dad had a work emergency. Or your brother Ty set fire to the toaster again. They just probably had to go and didnât want to distract you.â
Sadie hated feeling helpless. She wished she could go back and redo the entire first roundârewind the morning in instant replay mode and change everything. She had probably upset her parents and they were mad or embarrassed. But the judges were already huddled at their table, deciding who would stay and who would go.
âBakers, please face the judges,â Jerry commanded.
âNo matter what happens, weâre right behind you,â Kylie said, patting Sadie on the back.
Jerry held a card in his hands. âI have here the results of Round 1,â he began. âOne of you is cake royaltyâ¦but you failed to make a cupcake that could wow our judges. Bennyâ¦Iâm sorry. Youâre done at Battle of the Bakers .â
Bennyâs eyes grew wide. âBut Iâm the Cake Kingâ¦â
âYes, yes you are.â Jerry shook his hand. âBut for nowâ¦itâs ciao !â
âI donât believe it!â Kylie exclaimed. âWe made Round 2!â
âIt was totally my skateboard wipeout that did itâ¦Iâm great on TV,â Jenna teased.
âWhatever it was, we really have to bring it in the next round!â said Kylie.
Their cheering section went wild: Kylieâs mom and dad waved a big poster that read, âPeace, Love, and Cupcakes is sweet!â and Lexiâs big sister, Ava, high-fived Jennaâs big sis Gabriella.
âGo, PLC!â Juliette shouted from the audience. Her boyfriend, Mr. Higgins, was also there, giving them a thumbs-up.
âLook! Jeremy came!â Lexi said. âThat is sooooo nice!â He and his parents waved from the third row and were seated with Delaneyâs mom and dad.
Sadie combed the audience for her parents, but there was no sign of them. She didnât have much time to worry, though. Jerry summoned her back to the stage for the next roundâs instructions. And like Coach always told her, she needed to get her head in the game.
âThis round calls for the opposite of your Round 1 creation. For this baking battle, turn your cupcakes upside down. You have ninety minutes! Go!â
Sadie raced back to the kitchen. âI donât get it. Is that some kind of riddle?â
âI donât know,â said Kylie. âTheyâve never done this on Battle of the Bakers before!â
âWait, maybe Jenna can fall again and the cupcakes will land upside down on the judgesâ laps?â Delaney suggested.
âMaybe Jerry means we should reverse what we did with the first cupcake?â Sadie questioned. âLike instead of a hot chocolate cake, make a cold oneâ¦â
âAnd instead of cool frosting, make it hot?â Kylie followed her train of thought.
Jenna shook her head. âNo wayâ¦it canât be done! In ninety minutes? Not a chance!â
âWhat? What canât be done?â Delaney
