Devlin
?â
âJacobâs dadâs boat? Why?â
âI think theyâve called Jacobâs father on the mobile communication machine. Heâs coming to get them. Him and Victor.â
âDo you mean â not us? Not the rest of us?â
Both Flora Rose and Billy nod their heads vigorously.
âIâm struggling to understand this,â says Eric.
Iâm about to ask her how she knows when Tilly screams behind us. âBut you canât do that â you canât just abandon us!â
I turn to listen, staring with horror at Ericâs shocked face staring back at me.
âYou beast, Jacob Devlin! Iâll get you for that! Iâll never forget â Tilly Perks never forgets!â
Thereâs the distant sound of a motorboat.
âYOU RAT! YOU COMPLETE SEWER RAT! How could you do THIS to ME!â Tillyâs voice slides from angry to tears.
âOh dear,â says Flora Rose. âI think we may be slightly too late.â
Chapter 16
âTheyâve gone!â shouts Tilly, crashing back along the track, ignoring the ghastly sound of screaming trees as my axe bites into the first trunk. âJacobâs left us here! Itâs outrageous!â
âSo is this Victorâs work?â asks Eric, pulling on a branch which springs back, thwacking him in the face. âOw!â he protests and rubs his nose.
The purple figure that must be Billy scrapes a YES on a nearby rock.
âI knew it,â I say.
âWhat?â says Tilly.
âThat Victor was trouble. I could see it from the moment we found him.â
âWell, why didnât you tell me?â says Tilly, flaring her nostrils and doing a passable impression of a hayfevered horse before stopping to wipe something from her shoe.
I ignore her.
âWell, Iâm cross,â says Eric. âReally, quite cross.â He shakes his head and his curls flop over his face. âI feel let down. Yes, thatâs it. Betrayed.â He holds his finger up, making a point. âBetrayed by both of them. Victor said he could help â and weâve just rescued Jacob.â He kicks the ground. âActually, I feel foolish. Taken in. An absolute mug.â
Flora Rose sighs. âVictor isnât terribly nice, actually.â She smiles, and the lilac water over her face smiles too. âIn fact, heâs pretty beastly.â She wanders over to a pool of black, brackish water and gazes at her purple reflection.
âSo when you say that â do you mean that we should be worrying about what happens to Jacob?â I ask.
âWell  â¦Â â She swishes her ghostly skirt back and forth, and pulls an angry face at her reflection. âHeâs clever, heâs selfish, and heâs greedy. Does that answer your question?â
âWhatâs he greedy for?â I ask, managing to slice through the first tree trunk after hitting it about a billion times.
âPOWER,â Billy scratches in the sand at our feet.
âPower?â I say, watching a white balloon-shaped thing rise from the timber and float into the sky.
âThatâs one of the spirits,â says Flora Rose. âYouâve actually managed to release one â brilliant. Anyway  â¦Â â She tears herself away from the pool. âI think he wants your powers. I know it sounds silly but itâs so that he can take over the world. He loves what Jacob can do with the sparks.â
âTake over the world?â says Tilly, panting to a halt next to Flora Rose. âWho wants to take over the world?â
âVictor,â says Eric, wrinkling his face in pain. âOh dear. We had better do something. We canât just leave Jacob with a power-hungry ghoul. We are supposed to be his friends.â
He doesnât look convinced.
âWell, youâd better hurry up then, Tom,â says Tilly, sitting down on the felled tree trunk. âAnd if
