much and jerked hers away from his grasp. “I don’t think it’s a good idea.”
“Come to L.A. with me,” Brody told her. “Let’s try this again. I think last night was pretty successful, was it not?” his grin became wolfish.
She stepped back, blushing even more furiously. “You can’t just come into my life and demand whatever you want, then change your mind. And then change it back again.”
“Actually, I can,” Brody said. “I brought the papers to hire you,” he said. “They’re in the car outside. And that includes the bonus check, thirty thousand dollars upon signing. A raise of ten thousand dollars from our original agreement as a way of showing my appreciation for your…flexibility.”
“So ten thousand dollars erases you treating me like your little lap dog?”
Brody’s smile faded and his gaze intensified. “Ten thousand dollars is a gesture of good faith. And you’re no dog, Chloe. But I still might let you lay on my lap, despite that fact.”
Chloe was speechless. She was completely stumped. Part of her wanted to tell him to go screw, to get out of her life—just on principle.
But the much bigger portion of her wanted to be near him again, if just for another night. The truth was, she’d have gone with him even without the promise of a job or a check.
Still, the idea that he wanted to hire her and pay her extravagantly was meaningful to her. It meant that he wanted to keep her close to him and not simply use her and toss her aside as she’d feared.
He was here for a reason.
    And what is that reason?
Maybe he just got horny again .
But no, she knew it wasn’t anything quite that simple. Sure, he wanted sex. And she wanted sex too. But she didn’t only want sex, and she decided that Brody didn’t only want sex either. If he did, there were lots easier places to go and people for him to get it from.
Brody checked the time. “Do we have a deal or not?” he said. “I really do have to get on that plane. And I want you with me.”
She nodded, almost despite herself. “Yes, I’ll go,” she told him. “I must be crazy, but yeah. I’m going.”
“You’re not crazy, Chloe. It would be crazy if you said no.”
“I’m not sure what world you’re living in, Brody.”
“You’re about to find out,” he said, smiling confidently.
A chill went up her spine at the look on his face. “What about clothes, makeup…I don’t have anything with me.”
His grin faded but the hunger in his eyes deepened and he shook his head. “There’s nothing you need that I can’t provide. Shall we?” He said, gesturing to the door.
“I just need to let my mother and sister know,” she said softly.
“I’ll wait for you in the car,” he said, reaching out and touching her wrist with his fingertips.
Just the briefest touch of his fingers caused her entire body to feel electric and hot.
And then she was watching his tight ass as he turned and left the house, walking back towards the waiting vehicle.
“Shit,” she muttered, feeling dizzy from everything that was happening. As she walked down the hall to tell her mother and sister what was going on, they reappeared.
    Dana’s eyes were still wide.
Chloe’s mother looked like she’d just eaten something rotten. Her nose wrinkled. “That man is not a good person,” she said. “He’s full of himself and—“
“Mom, I don’t want to have this conversation right now,” Chloe told her. “I just wanted to let you know that I’m going.”
“Where are you going? California?” Dana said. She moved forward and grabbed Chloe’s hands. “He’s like the hottest thing I’ve ever seen. I can’t believe my sister’s dating Brody Hawk!”
Chloe blushed. “We’re not exactly dating—“
“Exactly,” her mother said pointedly. “You’re not doing anything of the sort. He’s a user and he’s only going to hurt you again—probably before the hour is up.”
“Maybe so,” Chloe said, “but it’s my choice to
