heading for Jamesâs office. She ran down the back stairs to the lobby and pushed through the door with a bang. Brad was waiting. âCome on,â she called. âIâm on to something important. We have to get moving,â she said, running over to Brad and then turning to run up the stairs to the second floor.
âWhatâs going on?â he asked, trailing behind her a couple of steps.
âI caught Ana and Andre destroying the costume storage room, looking for the diamond. It looks like theyâre the thieves. So now weâve got to convince James to help us stop themâeven without proof,â she said over her shoulder.
âUh, Nancy,â Brad asked, stopping for a minute, âis this going to be dangerous?â
Nancy rolled her eyes and looked at him. âWeâre just going to talk to James. But weâve got to do it now. Time is essential. Donât worry, weâll be fine.â
They trotted down the second floor hallway to Jamesâs office. But when they got there, the managing directorâs secretary told them theyâd just missed him. âIâm not sure where he went,â the woman told them. âI think he might have gone to see Colby. Why donât you try his office?â
âThanks!â Nancy called over her shoulder as she and Brad hurried to Colbyâs office next door.
No one was in the outer reception area, so when Nancy heard two hushed voices coming fromColbyâs office, she went to the door to listen. Neither voice was Jamesâs. Nancy started to move away from the door, but then she heard something that made her stop.
âThis company deserves every bit of bad publicity it gets.â Colby had raised his voice and it drifted out clearly through the door.
âCome on, Nancy. You just said we needed to find James,â Brad said.
âSsh,â Nancy told him sharply. âListen.â She motioned toward the office. âThis conversation just might convince me that weâve got another pair of suspects.â
Nancy walked soundlessly back toward the office door so that she could hear every word. As Brad followed her, a floorboard creaked. âBe quiet,â Nancy whispered. âWe canât let them hear us.â
âItâs outrageous,â Colby was saying. âJames shouldnât be able to push you into retirement. But then he doesnât care about dance,â he added bitterly. âAll heâs interested in is money. Money and publicity stunts!â
âUnfortunately, he has the power to do anything he wants with this company,â the woman in Colbyâs office was saying. That Russian accent! Nancy recognized it immediately. It was Katya Alexandrovna! âIf James Ellsworth wants to fire me, thereâs no one who can stop him. Because ofJames, neither of us is going to have a job next year.â
âUnless he gets blamed for the missing Raja diamond. The board of directors wouldnât keep him around after that.â
Nancy caught her breath. Could Colby and Katya have stolen the pin to get revenge against James? If so, it was a brilliant plan. But just like Ana and Andre, they hadnât come right out and said theyâd taken it. Either couple could still be guilty.
Oh, no, Nancy thought. Now I have two pairs of suspectsâbut no concrete proof against either of them. And even worse, no idea as to where the diamond could have been hidden.
Nancy could hear Katyaâs voice again. âThe police are alreadyââ But at that moment Brad coughedâvery loudly. Katyaâs voice broke off in midsentence. âWhat was that?â she asked sharply.
âCome on, Brad,â Nancy whispered urgently. âWeâve got to get out of here. Now!â
But before they could move a step, the door to Colbyâs office flew open. The artistic director and the ballerina stood glaring at them.
âJust what do you think youâre
