him!â
âJamal, what are you doing in there?â Elton hissed as he peered into the dark closet. âCome out here now!â
Jamal eased out of the closet. Thankfully, heâd cleaned up someand had put on a fresh T-shirt. He still looked weary around the eyes.
âAre you hiding him here?â Elton snapped at Gloria.
âGood to see you, too, Daddy,â Jamal said, his voice a mixture of sarcasm and exhaustion.
Elton took a deep breath and pulled his son into an awkward hug, then quickly released him. âOf course Iâm glad that youâre all right, but somebody needs to explain to me whatâs going on.â
âI just found out that he was here,â Gloria replied as Jamal continued to look at her like he couldnât believe that she had betrayed him. âBaby, Iâm sorry, but your dad needed to know.â
âYouâre doggone right!â Elton said. âYou got your mama running around putting her freedom on the line! How would you feel if they threw your mama in jail behind this?â
Jamal bit his bottom lip as a thin mist covered his eyes. Over the past year, heâd become defiant whenever Elton chastised him, but now, heâd returned to his childhood response to his fatherâs wrathâlooking away in shame.
âHe didnât have me doing anything, Elton,â Gloria protested. âWeâre trying to figure this out.â
âThereâs nothing to figure out. You have to turn yourself in,â Elton said.
âSee, Ma!â Jamal exclaimed, a look of panic spreading across his face.
âYou just have to cause havoc!â Elton said. He shook his head as he paced in the small bedroom. âDo you know the shame you have brought to this family?â
âItâs all about the shame,â Jamal mumbled.
Elton spun toward him, jabbing a finger in his face. âDonât youdare get smart. Do you know what the last few days have been like for us? A nightmare! And the police are following us everywhere. Theyâre even at church! Defiling Godâs house. Harassing the members. Harassing us. They were convinced we were hiding you somewhere!â He turned and glared at Gloria. âLittle did I know they were right.â
âDadââ
âDonât dad me,â Elton snapped, turning his venom back in Jamalâs direction. âDo you know your mama couldâve been arrested if they caught her coming here?â
âElton, now is not the time!â Gloria snapped, trying to cut off his rant. âWe need to help our son.â
âThis is ridiculous. Iâm gonna help him all right. Letâs go,â Elton said, grabbing Jamalâs arm.
âGo where?â Jamal asked as his father literally dragged him toward the door.
âWeâre about to go to the police station.â
Jamal broke free and darted across the room. âMom, see, this is what Iâm talking about!â he cried. âThis is why I didnât want him to know where I was!â
âSo, on top of everything else, you wanted your mama to lie to me?â Elton said.
Panic swept through Gloriaâs body. âStop it! Just calm down. Both of you,â she said. âWe need to talk about this.â
âThereâs nothing we need to talk about.â Elton looked back and forth between the two of them, then settled his gaze on Gloria. He took a deep breath and stepped toward his wife as if he desperately wanted to reason with her. âHe has to turn himself in, Gloria. There is no other way. Theyâll come in here shooting at me and you.â Heturned back to Jamal. âIâm not going to let you ruin this family, son.â
âI am this family,â Jamal cried. âDoes anyone care about me?â
âOf course we do,â Elton said, âbut weâre not going to condone you shooting a police officer.â
âI didnât mean to shoot him!â
