Bronwyn also knew the source of Aidenâs sulkiness. âAre you sure itâs her? Did you see her?â
âI havenât seen her myself,â Bliss said. âBut Peggy has.â
âItâs been a long time,â Chloe said. âShe mightâve changed a lot. Maybe Peggy made a mistake.â
âCould you mistake anybody else for Bo-Kate Wisby?â Bliss asked.
âMaybe one of them barracuda fish,â Chloe said.
âIâve been hearing about her all my life,â Bronwyn said, shifting to find a better position, âbut I thought she couldnât come back.â
âShe shouldnât be able to,â Bliss said. âShe was sung all the way out. Itâs the only time thatâs ever happened since we came here. She shouldnât even be able to find Needsville anymore.â
âSo how did it happen?â Bronwyn pressed.
âThatâs just one of the questions we have to find the answer to.â Blissâs cell phone rang, and she looked at the number. âWell, shit.â
âWhat?â said Chloe.
âItâs Junior Damo.â
âYou going to answer it?â Chloe asked.
Bliss shrugged and put the phone to her ear. âHello? Yes, Junior, I remember you. What can I do for you?â She paused to listen. âIs that a fact? I hadnât heard about that. What do you think she wants?â Again she listened, and her face hardened. âWell, that just ainât going to happen. So why are you calling to tell me this?â
This time she listened for a long moment. âI see. Iâll pass it on, then. It ainât my decision. Yeah, I got your number. Good-bye.â She turned off her phone and said, âJunior wants to meet with Mandalay.â
âWhat about?â
âHe figures we may all have to get together to get rid of Bo-Kate.â
âSheâs just one woman,â Bronwyn said. âIf yâall want, I canââ
âNo,â Bliss and Chloe said together.
âWhat, you think we should just talk to her? Get all touchy-feely with her?â
âI think that may be a better first step,â Chloe said.
âYeah, well, I donât do touchy-feely. I do punchy-bleedy.â
âI know,â Bliss said. âThatâs why youâre not the right person for this.â
Bronwyn glared at them both. âItâs because Iâm pregnant, isnât it?â
âItâs because it ainât your place,â Bliss said.
âSheâs causing trouble. Iâm the one who usually stops it when people do that.â
âThis is bigger than what you handle,â Bliss said. âJunior confirmed what Peggy told me: Bo-Kate cut off Rockhouseâs extra fingers. Now I have to go find Mandalay. Get the word out to the other First Daughters, if they donât already know. Which reminds me ⦠either of you had any dreams about airplanes?â
Chloe and Bronwyn shook their heads.
âNothing about flying around outside one of them old single-engine planes? Okay, guess it was just me. Iâll be in touch. If I donât find her before midnight, weâll have to put the word out to everyone.â She left and descended the hill to her truck. The snow had begun to fall again.

Nigelâs voice vibrated along with the shuddering SUV as he said, âYour peopleâs definition of âroadâ is very fluid, isnât it?â
âThis isnât a road,â Bo-Kate said through clenched teeth. âItâs a driveway.â
âDoes anyone ever use it to leave?â
âNot if they can help it.â
It was early evening, and the mountain shadows made it dark for all practical purposes. The trees and terrain kept the house hidden until the very last minute, when the SUV rounded a bend and emerged into a clearing. The headlights raked dramatically across the front porch, illuminating
