meat on his side of the pizza was tempting, but not something that I was going to allow myself to take a taste.
My side had only sauce, mushrooms and peppers. I did miss eating meat, but getting rid of it had been necessary for my dietary necessities.
“I feel the same way about Emily. She makes you feel comfortable and you’re right, she does make you feel like you’re talking to a friend and not a therapist.” My kitchen was built to make food sing on a plate, but unfortunately our time was limited when we got back from work. I was the only one that made the effort, but there were times that he would roll up his sleeves and give me a hand in the kitchen. I remember having a few unusual food fights that ended with us making out. I had a feeling that he was going to call me on the carpet with a ring on my finger soon.
“I almost forgot to tell you that I got a message from Wilson. He didn’t make much sense and was screaming why and who was responsible. I tried to call him back, but I only got his voice mail. I hope that everything is OK with him and Rebecca. I know that they’re your friends, but I feel like I’ve gotten to know them in a way that makes them my friends.” Rebecca was my sister from another mother. We shared everything about each other, except for the one thing that remained the elephant in the room.
“I’ll give her a call on her main line. She sometimes vets phone numbers and doesn’t like to talk to those telemarketers that are looking to do their job.” I understood why she would feel that way, but they were being paid and it seemed rude not to at least hear them out. “Rebecca will still be up and she’s been known to watch all of those late night talk shows.” I picked up my phone and the first ring meant nothing, but after the 10 th , I started to get this sinking feeling in my stomach.
This was her personal cell phone and one that would never be found out of her hand. Even when she went to bed, she would keep it nearby in case somebody had to call for some kind of emergency. She was a paramedic and was always on call, but today was one of those days that she had off. I was planning to stop by and have a chat, but I never did get that far. She knew that I was busy and that if I didn’t show up it was probably for a good reason.
After the 15 th ring, I finally gave up and was about to put down the phone, when somebody else came on the other end of the line. “Rebecca, I was little worried there for a second and you really shouldn’t pull at my heartstrings like that.” I waited for an answer, but all I got was this heavy breathing of the other and. “This isn’t funny. If you think that you are being funny, then you’re sadly mistaken. Say something damn it.” I was getting a little hot under the collar. Rebecca wasn’t known for practical jokes and this in itself was causing me great concern.
“Won’t you come out to play.” It was a child’s voice, but digitized to make it sound that way. “Won’t you come out to play…Michaela?” I stood there in the kitchen with Neil behind me waiting for some kind of explanation. “If you really want to see your friend alive again, then you’ll come to the park at 7:00 AM sharp. Sit on the bench further south of the park. We’re going to play a little game. You do like games, don’t you Michaela? I want you to come out to play.” The line went dead and then a photo of Rebecca gagged and bound with red masking tape across her mouth came on to my phone. It was there one second and then the next the pixels of the photo began to disappear like a virus had eaten it.
“Are you going to leave me in suspense? What’s going on with Rebecca and Wilson? I have him on the other line and all I can hear is screaming. The last thing he said was no and that it couldn’t be and then the line went dead. I think that it might be a good idea for us to go over there and it’s not more than a couple of minutes away.” It wasn’t like I
