Iâm not ready!â Delaney cried.
âWell, they apparently are.â Her mom tried to smile. âDadâs going to take me to the hospital, and Sophieâs mom will bring you there after the performance.â
Delaneyâs head was spinning. âWait! No! Iâm going with you!â
Her mother took her hand. âHoney, Iâll be fine. You know better than I do that the show must go on. Wilbur canât walk out.â
âBut, Mommyâ¦â Delaneyâs eyes filled with tears. âYouâll miss it.â
âIâll record the whole thing so she can watch it later,â Sophieâs dad volunteered.
âAnd Iâll take good care of Mommy.â Delaneyâs dad winked. âTrust me, Iâve been through this before. You were four weeks early yourself. Impatience must run in the Noonan family.â
âOh!â Mrs. Noonan groaned again. âI think we should get going⦠now !â
Ms. Kutchen clapped her hands and summoned everyoneâs attention. âPlease, everybody, take your seats, and, actors, take your places.â
Delaney couldnât move. She watched helplessly as her dad and mom made their way out of the auditorium. Her mom was hunched over and panting. She looked like she was in so much pain! Delaney just wanted to run after her!
âLaney, everyoneâs waiting for you,â Kylie said, tapping her friend gently on the shoulder.
Delaney spun around. âI canât. I canât do it. How am I supposed to go up there and sing and dance when my mom is on her way to the hospital?â
âWithout you, thereâs no show,â Lexi reminded her.
Kylie nodded. âYou have to be strong. I know youâre scared, but weâre right here for you.â
âAnd where thereâs a Wilbur, thereâs a way,â Jenna joked, trying to cheer her up.
The girls escorted Delaney up the steps of the stage and behind the curtain where her classmates were all waiting. Sophie looked frantic.
âI thought you were going to leave,â she said. âHow can I be Charlotte if youâre not Wilbur?â
âIâll stay, I guess,â Delaney said quietly. Although it was the last thing in the world she felt like doing.
âThank goodness!â Ms. Kutchen said, dotting her forehead with a handkerchief. âShow business is so much more complicated than teaching literature!â
She took Delaney by the shoulders and stared into her eyes. âWeâre counting on you, Delaney,â Ms. Kutchen said, giving her a pep talk. âPlease donât let meâI mean, usâdown.â
âI hope you donât mindâ¦I brought someone backstage to say hello.â Delaney looked up and saw Ms. Roveen in the wings. Milly was holding her hand and pulling them in Delaneyâs direction.
âDee-lay-nee is a piggy!â The little girl giggled. âOink! Oink!â
Delaney took a deep breath and tried to put on a brave face. âHi, Milly! Are you watching the show?â
âWe are,â Ms. Roveen said. âWeâre loving it, and weâre hoping to see the rest.â
Millyâs head bobbed up and down. âMore! More piggy show!â She giggled.
Delaney kneeled down so she could be snout to nose with Milly.
âOkay, Princess Milly, Iâll do it for you,â she said. âYou go back to your seat with Mommy, okay?â
Milly nodded, and Delaney watched as she and Ms. Roveen settled back into their seats.
âThe show will now resume,â Ms. Kutchen announced over the loudspeaker. Then she added, âI hope⦠Cue the curtain!â
It was time for the big county-fair scene. Wilbur had to hold his head high and dance around his pen as the entire cast sang, âOh, gee, what do you see? Zuckermanâs Famous Pig!â Delaney closed her eyes and tried to focus. She thought about how proud her parents would be, and how much Milly
