anonymous, shouldnât we let her be?â Charlene said.
Finn studied the people in the busy breakfast room. âShe can help us,â he said. âBut most importantâ¦the most important mission of all⦠Before we reach Aruba tomorrow, we need to find Chernabog. If we find him, if security locks him up, then it wonât matter whatâs in the journal. We wonât have to do any of this.â He thought back to his communication with Wayne. âWe get Chernabog, and we spoil their plans, whatever they are. Heâs the key.â
âItâs not like they can hide him just anywhere,â Maybeck said.
âWell, heâs no longer in the box under the stage,â Willa said.
âBut how far could he go without being seen?â Finn said. âSomething like that? There are passengers, crew, cameras. Someone would have seen him.â
âSo maybe heâs still backstage somewhere. Thereâs a lot of room there,â Storey said.
âTonight, during the orientation, weâll be
backstage.â Philbyâs voice rose with excitement. âWeâre part of the program.â
âYou remember what happened last time we were in the theater?â Maybeck asked. âAs in: chaos?â
Maleficent had made a video appearance at an evening show that had resulted in thorny roses raining down on the passengers.
âBut thatâs the point, isnât it?â Philby said. âWhat if the OTs are counting on us being too scared to go backstage?â
âTheyâd be right,â Willa said. âItâs a miracle no one was hurt the first time!â
âWeâll appear in the orientation as scheduled,â Finn declared. âBut weâll arrive backstage twenty minutes earlyâas a group. Thatâll give us extra time. We meet at the stage door, starboard side. Theyâre not going to make us wait out in the hallway. Theyâll let us backstage, and thatâs our chance.â
âI like it,â Philby said.
As if I care, Finn nearly said. But the truth was: he did care. He not only needed Philbyâs support, he wanted it.
âWilla and I can say we need a place to work on our makeup,â Charlene said. âThatâll get us separated into two groups, once inside. Two are better than one.â
âNice,â Philby said.
âBoys take the backstage area,â Finn said. âGirls: the salon, costumes, and the other rooms downstairs.â
âThereâs no way Security missed him,â Maybeck said. âHas anyone thought about that?â
âDepends on how well the OTs hid him,â Finn said. âAnd why .â
âMeaning?â Charlene said.
âMaybe the OTs donât want Chernabog found because they havenât figured out how to wake him out of this torpor thing yet. Maybe Tia Dalma isnât doing so well with waking up her hummingbirds. Who knows? Maybe theyâre worried about how theyâll control him.â
âThe stuff in the journal,â Willa said, her voice a whisper.
âWhat if itâs more like an ownerâs manual?â Finn said.
âYou have to do it right. And then whoever wakes himâ¦â Philby said, speculating.
âYes!â Finn said. âWhoever decodes the journal properly and applies it to Chernabog as he comes out of torpor ends up in control of him.â
Maybeck coughed. âUs? Control Chernabog?â
âI like the sound of that,â Professor Philby said.
W ILLA HAD DONE HER HOMEWORK and was eager to share what sheâd found. The first to arrive in the unremarkable companionway outside the starboard stage door to the Walt Disney Theatre, she waited for the others. Impatiently. Overcome by the hallwayâs dullness. Drab walls. No artwork. Several unmarked doors. At the end, the backstage entrance: CAST MEMBERS ONLY PLEASE .
In all likelihood, a monster lurked on the other side of that door.
