heâd had a lifetime of training, so when his father was incapacitated, Jeff went in his place, and heâd done an excellent job. Not one argument had gone past the shouting stage.
When Jeff first mentioned Skylar to his father, they had gone to downtown Williamsburg to The Trellis restaurant. Jeff knew that after lunch his father would want to go to the William and Mary bookstore and spend hours browsing.
But the minute their order was placed, Thomas started on his favorite topic: Cassie. As always, he asked Jeff when he was going to ask Cassie out.
âDonât start on me again,â Jeff said. âCassie is wonderful, but if I let her get close to me, sheâll find out too much, and you know that she couldnât handle the truth about my life.â
âDonât underestimate her,â Thomas said. âThereâs more to that girl than you think.â
âDo you forget that Iâve known her for a very long time?â
âSince you never let me forget it, how could I?â
Jeff paused until the waiter had put his salad down and left. âLook, Dad, Cassie is great. I couldnât like a girl better than I like her, but, face it, sheâs a quiet, gentle person. She lives in a world thatâs normal. My world would scare her. Look at the way sheâs terrified of her own mother.â
âIâve met Margaret Madden, and she scares everybody.â
Jeff ate a few bites before speaking. âCassie is an innocent and itâs better that way. She stays at home with Elsbeth and thatâs all she needs.â
Thomas smiled. âIâve seen the way you look at her, and itâs not especially âinnocent.ââ
Jeff grinned. âWho wouldnât? Sheâs a knockout.â
âSheâs in love with you.â
Jeff put his fork down. âShe thinks she is, but itâs just an old-fashioned crush that sheâs carried into adulthood. She loves my daughter, and thatâs whatâs important.â
âJeff, my son, youâre a fool. Someday that beautiful young woman is going to get tired of waiting for you.â
âSheâs not waiting for me . If she finds some nice young man, great. Iâll walk her down the aisle and give her away.â
Thomas looked at his son in astonishment. âI wonder where your mother and I failed in raising you. Or do you think itâs a genetic defect? I must brush up on my Mendel to see how two intelligent people could give birth to an idiot.â
âAre you finished?â
âNo. Iâm not going to be finished until you come to your senses about Cassie. If you donât do something soon, someoneâs going to swoop down and snatch her away from you.â
âGood. I hope she finds someone nice and safe .â
Thomas snorted in derision. âIâd like to see what youâd do if someone went after Cassie.â
âYou donât know me as well as you think you do. Look, letâs forget this. I have a problem. You remember David Beaumont?â
âI remember his money.â
âThe agency wants him to helpââ Jeff broke off and looked away.
âI know. You canât tell me. So whatâs the problem?â
âThey want me to look after his daughter for a while. Get her settled here in Williamsburg.â
âIs she too old for Elsbeth?â
Jeff smiled. âI guess so. Sheâs thirty-four and gorgeous.â
Thomas was silent as their entrées were placed before them. âAnd how were you chosen to be this womanâs escort?â
Jeff shrugged. âI donât know. She and Roger Craig knew each other in college, soââ
âCouldnât he and that lovely wife of his, Dana, show this older woman around?â
Jeff frowned. âWhat is wrong with you today? Iâm going to be spending time with a beautiful woman. Havenât you been complaining that I never go
