difference does it make?â Sallyâs demon asked. âLetâs eat the rest of her and leave her liver alone.â
âIt makes a big difference,â Watchâs demon said. âIf she caught type B or C she could still be a carrier of the virus. If we eat her, any part of her, we might get sick.â
Sallyâs demon snorted. âThatâs ridiculous!â
âIt also happens to be accurate,â Adamâs demon said.
Cindy smiled in relief. âYeah, you donât want to get sick. Now that I think about it, I had type B. Yeah, Iâm definitely a carrier of the virus. But thatâsOK. Thereâs plenty of food here. Just have one of these slabs of beef. Really, I donât mind cooking you something to go with it. Iâm a great cook. My mother always works long hours and I have to do most of the cooking. Iâm flexible, too, when it comes to requests. Anyway you want your food is fine with me. You can have it spicy or bland.â She added quietly, âJust donât eat me.â
The demons looked at one another. âShe could be lying about the hepatitis,â Sallyâs demon said.
âIf we did a blood test weâd know for sure,â Watchâs demon said.
âWe canât do a blood test,â Adamâs demon snapped. âWeâre in a freezer, not a medical laboratory. Besides weâre demons. We donât know how to do blood tests.â The demon suddenly stopped and glanced over his shoulder. âWait a second. We are in a freezer.â
Watchâs demon put a hand out to steady himself. âAnd the doorâs locked. Thatâs bad. The coldâs bad.â
Sallyâs demon swayed and pointed a claw at Cindy. âShe tricked us to come in here! Itâs her fault! Letâs kill her!â
The three demons nodded in agreement and turned on her.
âNo!â Cindy cried, backing into a wall. âIf you eat me youâll get sick! Remember?â
âWe can kill you without eating you,â Adamâs demon said, now only three feet away. Ignoring her burning flare, he reached out with his gross scaly hand and grabbed her by the hair. Yet he seemed to be moving in slow motion, and Cindy realized the cold was finally getting to him and the others. If she could just delay one minute more, sheâd probably be all right. Adamâs demon added, âDo you have any final words?â
âYes,â Cindy said quickly, stalling for time. âJust before you kill me I want to say that itâs been a pleasure meeting demons like you. I understand you come from a poor neighborhood and that I canât judge you by my standardsâwhen I have had every advantage in life. It would be completely unfair. Really, considering where you guys started, youâve come pretty far. I just wanted to congratulate you.â
Watchâs demon seemed impressed, although he continued to sway as he spoke, almost as if he could no longer feel his legs. âThat is awfully gracious of you. Youâre one of the few humans weâve met who understands how difficult it is to grow up a demon.â
âYes, itâs a hard life,â Adamâs demon said, yawningheavily. âBut we try not to complain. Our motto is, If it hurts, it can always hurt more.â
Sallyâs demon staggered and bumped into a side of beef, setting the red meat swaying back and forth in the gruesome red light of the flare. âEnough compliments,â she said. âOpen her throat and let her bleed to death. We have to find a way out of here.â
Adamâs demon nodded and moved a claw up to her throat. He tried to grip her neck, but his fingers were having trouble working.
âIâm sorry I have to do this, but we are the bad guys,â he said. âWeâre supposed to do bad things. Itâs our nature.â
Cindy met his gaze and suddenly she didnât feel afraid, even though she had begun
