on his face that I can’t
quite read. I decide I’ve had enough and begin to move my hips,
tightening my muscles, and riding his cock from underneath him. He
lasts for all of five seconds before he groans and says, “Damn it,
Kate.”
Then he’s fucking me back, meeting every
thrust. The sound our bodies make when we connect only turns me on
more.
    “I’m going to come.”
My voice is high and I briefly wonder if I’m
too loud.
But then Gabriel is saying, “Come for me,
Kate. I need you to,” and I don’t care who can hear me. He’d
delivered his own desperate plea and my body responded. All I can
do is wrap myself around him, and let him hold me as I explode.

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

I have to root around under the bed in order
to find my other shoe. Gabriel’s voice behind me is low and
soft.
“Don’t get up. I love the view.”
I smile despite what I know I have to do. I
rise to my feet and Gabriel is behind me, slipping his around my
waist and pulling me close. “I like when you’re on your hands and
knees,” he whispers into my ear and I shudder. “I told you, you
don’t have to go.”
“You have writing to do,” I say, turning to
face him. I drop the missing shoe on the floor and rest a hand on
his shoulder to keep my balance so I can put it on. “And I have…
stuff… I need to take care of today.”
He makes a sound that’s half sigh and half
growl. Within seconds he’s kissing my neck. “I need to tell you
something.” I marvel over how confident I sound – definitely more
than I feel. He pulls away and looks at me. His eyes are wary.
    “What’s wrong?”
“I think we should… stop. Seeing each
other.”
“What…” The word trails off as he blows out
his breath. He looks around the suite. The bed is still unmade, the
sheets in various twists and clumps from our lovemaking. The dining
table is covered with the remnants of the lavish breakfast he
ordered. I can see that he’s trying to piece together what went
wrong. What he did. And my heart breaks.
“It’s what you said would happen, Gabriel.
Someone always wants more and right now that person is me, and I’m
keeping my word. I don’t want to complicate this for you, but I
also don’t want to get hurt.”
Gabriel places his hands on his hips. He’s
shirtless, wearing jeans, and I imagine this is what he looks like
when he’s on his farm. I want to say that I’ve changed my mind. I
want to take off my clothes, crawl back into the bed, and tell him
to take me any way he wishes.
“When did you decide this, Kate?” He no
longer looks confused, just angry.
I take a deep breath. “Before I came here
last night.”
He lets out a short, harsh laugh and shakes
his head.
“I didn’t tell you last night for the same
reason I’m doing this. Because I want to be with you.” I take a
tentative step towards him and when he doesn’t move away, I place
my hands on his chest. His skin is so warm, but I feel his muscles
tighten at my touch and that breaks my heart, too.
“I think about you all the time, Gabriel.
And I care for you. I want to be able to say that and not worry
that it’s going to scare you away from me.”
We stare at each other for a few moments
before I feel him relax.
“What do you mean by more?”
I blink and a tear falls, but I’m too
shocked to wipe it away. This is not at all what I expected. I
didn’t have a list of demands because I was certain Gabriel would
just let me go.
“You think about me all the time,” he
continues. “You care for me. I heard you and I’m not scared. So,
what more do you want?”
Madelyn’s words come back to me. “If you
don’t want me to be with another man while we’re together, you need
to ask me. It has to be because you care about me, too. Not because
you view me as a possession.” I slide my hands to his arms. Like
everything else, his biceps are solid. “And when you ask me,
Gabriel, and I tell you yes that I will only be with you, you
