talk to.
True.
But what if?
Donât worry about if.
Just do it.
Here goes nothing.
Before I changed my mind, I quickly went into the living room and dialed my motherâs number. She answered on the first ring. âHey, baby girl!â She was way too excited. âYou mustâve heard me talking about you to your stepfather and Cousin Shake.â
âSaying what?â
âWhat else? That you donât call home enough.â
I attempted a laugh and hopefully it didnât sound as fake to her as it did to me.
âAre you okay?â she asked.
âYeah, Ma. Iâm fine.â
âSure?â
âYeah.â
âWell, Cousin Shake wants to speak to you.â
I am sooo not in the mood for this dude. âNo, Ma. Wait!â
âHey, Fat Mama,â Cousin Shake said, calling me by my childhood nickname. âI know you been missinâ me, âcause Iâve been missinâ you.â
âAw, really?â
âShoâ have. And I just told yo mama that we needed to call you and make sure that you werenât somewhere gettinâ yo nasty girl on.â
âCousin Shake!â I heard my mother say in the background. âWatch it.â
âLet me go on in another room. âCause your mama acts like nobody can say a thang to you.â
I rolled my eyes to the ceiling. I could hear him breathing heavy as he walked from one room to the other. âNow what was I saying? Oh yeah. I told your mama we need to make sure youâre not being all greasy down in the bayou. âCause Lawd knows, had Minnie checked up on lil Bootsy, she wouldnât be around here babysittinâ. And she knows I donât even like kids. âSpecially when theyâre interfering with me and my wife gettinâ our ron-day-vu-vu on.â
âWhat is that? You mean rendezvous?â
âThatâs what I said. Gettinâ our ronday-vu-vu on. Iâm only sixty-four years old, and in the middle of the night, I like to get my roll on.â
Ew. âCousin Shake, thatâs gross. Now can you put my mother back on the phone?â
âDonât be rushing me. I told you I missed you. And I ainât talked to you in a minute. But see, I ainât like your mama. Sheâs around here with her feelings all hurt âcause yâall donât talk much. But Iâma make you talk to me, Fat Mama.â
Oh no!
Cousin Shake carried on. âNow let me tell you âbout your sisters and brothers. Lawd, your mama got all these chilâren round here. Well, your twin sister, Toi, she runninâ round here half crazy. Done changed her major to premed. Scared da hell outta me! I wouldnât let that hoochie check me for a fever and now she wants to diagnose somebody? Oh, nawl. Anybody who had a baby at sixteen, I donât trust âem.â
Jesus must hate me.
Cousin Shake went on, âAnd your lil nephew, Noah. My Gawd. He runninâ round here like a lil hood rat. Iâm waitinâ for him to try and rob me at bottle-point any day now. Anybody thatâs two years old with five teeth, I donât trust âem.â
âHeâs just a baby, Cousin Shake.â
âYeah, thatâs the same thing your mama said, but that donât mean a thang to me. Now your little brother, Malik. Heâs about the most respectful one around here. Only thang is, he eats up everythang in sight. The other night I thought I was gonna have to handle him for the way he was watchinâ my pork chop.â
âCousin Shake, can I please speak to my mother?â
âOh, you just gonâ cut me off and be all rude.â
âI wasnât trying to be rude.â
âGood. Now let me tell you about your sister, Gem. Iâm waitinâ for her to get sexed into a gang any day now. And your other brother, Man-Man, the fake playa, I told your mama that the way he stays in that bathroom, I swear heâs washing off
