on.â
âI know. I wanted to...â She stared at her lap. âI started to, actually.â She explained about the day sheâd come home and found her mother crying over the bills and having to leave the church and that she couldnât bring a baby into the house.
âWe would have found a way,â her mom said.
âI know. But I thought marrying Dev was an easier option. Only now Iâve fallen in love with him and he doesnât want me to.â
âTell me about that,â her mother said.
âI was so scared at first, but he made everything wonderful.â She talked about how they got to know each other and how the more they knew, the more there was to like.
âI couldnât believe it was so easy,â she admitted. âWe mesh. He even likes peanut butter cookies better than chocolate chip, just like me. He wants to be there for the baby. Heâs kind and responsible and...â
âIncredible in bed.â
Noelle felt herself blush. âMo-om.â
âHe must be or it would be a lot easier to leave.â
âThat part of our relationship is fine,â she said primly.
Her mother laughed. âMy daughter, the prude.â
âIâm not a prude. Sex with Dev is amazing, but youâre my mother.â
âOkay, fine. Weâll talk about that later, when youâve had time to adjust to the fact that I do it, too.â
Noelle closed her eyes and groaned. âI know. I just donât want to share details.â
Her mother laughed. âI wonât do that. I promise.â Her smile faded. âWhat do you want?â
âI want him to love me back. He says he canât. I think he wonât. Heâs had so much happen in his life. His mother dying, his dad leaving.â She talked a little about Jackson Hunter and his unexpected return. âDev isnât really dealing with him, although Iâm hoping theyâll reconcile. After Devâs grandfather died, he was responsible for raising Jimmy and that didnât go well.â
She detailed how Dev blamed himself for his brotherâs death.
âFrom what youâve said, it seems to me that everyone Dev has loved has either gone away or rejected him or both,â her mother told her.
Noelle hadnât thought of his past like that, but it was true. Everyone always left or died. Was that the problem? Did he think he couldnât trust anyone who cared to stick around?
âWhat about his romantic relationships?â her mother asked. âDid you know much about them?â
âHe dated a lot of beautiful women. Never for very long, though. Katherine told me once that heâd been engaged a few years ago. Supposedly he was crazy about her, but she wasnât willing to marry him and deal with Jimmy.â
âWhich means no one has been willing to stick around for Dev,â her mother said slowly. âMaybe thatâs your answer.â
âWhat if he wonât give in? What if he wonât love me back?â
âHappiness isnât a guarantee, Noelle. You have to decide what you most want and then be willing to work for it. You and Dev have only been married a few weeks. Before that, youâd barely met the man. Give it time. Have faith in him and yourself and the life youâre building together.â
Good advice, Noelle thought, hoping she was able to take it. âIâm sorry I lied about everything.â
âIâm sorry you felt you had to. Iâd say next time trust me enough to tell me the truth, but I donât think thereâs going to be a next time.â
Noelle smiled. âI promise Iâll never get into a situation like this again. Are you going to tell Dad?â
Her mother nodded. âBut not the girls. They donât need to know the details of your unusual arrangement.â
âThanks. Do you think we have a chance?â
âYes. Donât give up on him. I like Dev and
