his story.
I sat back and thought of the luck had finding these people and the blind luck that had led me back to save Jake.
“Well Jake it looks like you had a good streak of luck and let’s hope it last a lot longer.” I said.
    “You and me both young’un.”
I stood up and held out my hand and shook his.
“You get some rest and we’ll talk in the morning.” I said walking to the door.
    “Marc!” He said.
“Yeah?” I said turning at the door.
“What happened with those other groups you were talking about?” He asked.
I looked at the floor before raising my eyes to look at him.
“They died, Jake. Them and a good friend.” I said.
“I thought as much. Good night Marc you’re a good man and so is Chris.”
I waved my hand and left the room and headed to my own. Opening the door I saw Chris sitting on the chair waiting for me.
“Heard you talking to the Old Man.” He said.
“He’s called Jake. He’s pretty sharp.” I said.
“He sounded like it when we were waiting for you to come back from you suicide run.” He said smiling.
I walked over to the bed and took my boots off and sat down on the edge.
“What’s on your mind Chris?” I asked.
“After you left with Jake, I was asked who was in charge…”
I waited for the other shoe to drop.
“And?” I said looking him in the eyes.
“I said that at the moment you were…” He must have seen my face because he quickly added “The reason I said that was, because you were quick off the mark with the distraction and the rescue attempt. I mean it, I didn’t have a fucking clue how to rescue those people and you did. Look if you’re not wanting to be in charge we can wait and see how the others turn out and turn it over to one of them.”
Groaning I put my head in my hands. After all I never wanted to be a leader that was what I was hoping Chris would do. A thought came through my brain.
“Ok, how about this? I make the security and snap judgements and we as a group discuss the overall stuff?” I asked.
“That’s fine by me, and I think that Rosa will be happy with that as well.”
“Why Rosa?” I asked, I mean I had a rough idea but wanted to hear it from Chris.
“She was just saying why there was only one person in charge? I couldn’t give her an answer so she said we should have a meeting to discuss it. A fucking meeting can you believe it. The world hasn’t been fucked up for more than a week or two and the bureaucrats have moved in again.”
I burst out laughing at that, she had given me that impression when we were in the A.P.C. Chris started to laugh as well. After we had gotten ourselves under control, Chris said goodnight and left me by myself. When he left I went to the cupboard and pulled out the bottle I had been drinking the other night and a glass. Sitting at the head of the bed with a pillow propping me up I started to drink. My mind had too many images running through it for me to sleep without help.

Chapter Twelve

That night even with the help of the whiskey, I was visited by several ghosts at the bottom of my bed. One after the other they came and accused me of killing them before their time. It got to the point where I left my bed put a t-shirt on and jeans and headed for the second floor gym. If I tired myself out maybe I could fall asleep and not dream. I ran circuits and lifted weights, I even toyed with the idea of going for a swim. In the end I headed to the security room and sat in the dark with the monitors casting their black and white glow over me. I must have fallen asleep with my feet on the desk because when Chris barged in, that was how I woke up.
“Marc, thank fuck! Went by your room this morning and you weren’t there.” He said heaving in breaths with his hands on his knees.
“No shit Sherlock!” I said rubbing my eyes.
“I asked everyone and they said that they hadn’t seen you since to walked out the dining room with Jake last night.”
    “I couldn’t see so
