call them pre-petroleum persons.â
âYeah,â said Bigmac. âOne Million Years PC. Get it? âCos there was this film called One Million Years B C, butââ
Kirstyâs mouth was open.
âDo you lot go on like this all the time?â she said. âYes, you do. Iâve noticed it before, actually. Ratherthan face up to facts, you start yakking on about weird things. When are we?â
âMay the twenty-first,â said Johnny, sitting down next to her. âJust gone half past three.â
âOh yes?â said Kirsty. âAnd how come youâre so sure?â
âI went and asked a man who was walking his dog,â said Johnny.
âDid he say what year?â
Johnny met Kirstyâs gaze. âNo,â he said. âBut I know what year.â
They climbed out of the hollow and pushed their way through the bushes.
A scrubby field stretched away below them. There were some allotment gardens at the bottom end of the field, and then a river, and then the town of Blackbury.
It was definitely Blackbury. There was the familiar rubber boot factory chimney. There were a few other tall chimneys as well. Heâd never seen those before. The man with the dog was watching them from some way off. So was the dog. Neither of them seemed particularly Jurassic, although the dog looked somewhat suspicious.
âWha . . ?â said Wobbler. âHere, whatâs been happening? What have you done?â
âI told you weâd travelled in time,â said Kirsty. âWerenât you listening?â
âI thought it was just some trick! I thought you were just messing about!â He gave Johnny a very worried look. âThis is just messing about, isnât it?â
âYes.â
Wobbler relaxed.
âItâs messing about with time travel,â said Johnny.
Wobbler looked scared again.
âSorry. But thatâs Blackbury all right. Itâs just smaller. I think weâre where the mall is going to be.
âHow do we get back?â said Yo-less.
âIt just sort of happens, I think.â
âYouâre just doing it with hallucinations, arenât you,â said Wobbler, never a boy to let go of hope. âItâs probably the smell from the trolley. Weâll come round in a minute and have a headache and itâll all be all right.â
âIt just sort of happens?â said Yo-less. He was using his careful voice again, the voice that said there was something nasty on his mind. âHow do you get back?â
âThereâs a flash, and there you are,â said Kirsty.
âAnd youâre back where you left?â
âOf course not. Only if you didnât move. Otherwise you go back to wherever where you are now is going to be then.â
There was silence while they all worked this out.
âYou mean,â said Bigmac, âthat if you walk a couple of metres, youâll be a couple of metres away from where you started when you get back?â
âYes.â
âEven if thereâs been something built there?â said Yo-less.
âYes ⦠no ⦠I donât know.â
âSo,â said Yo-less, still speaking very slowly, âif thereâs a lot of concrete, what happens?â
They all looked at Kirsty. She looked at Johnny.
âI donât know,â he said. âProbably you kind of ⦠get lumped together.â
âYuk,â said Bigmac.
There was a wail from Wobbler. Sometimes, when it involved something horrible, his mind worked very fast.
âI donât want to end up with just my arms sticking out of a concrete wall!â
âOh, I donât think itâd happen like that,â said Yo-less.
Wobbler relaxed, but not much. âHow would it happen, then?â he said.
âWhat I think would happen is, see, all the atoms in your body, right, and all the atoms in the wall would be trying to be in the same place at the same
