ghost.â
Ericâs eyes went wide. âSeriously?â Delia had never paid any attention to him before.
She tugged at a strand of her white-blonde hair. âI watch Ghost Hunters every week,â she said. âItâs my favorite show.â
âMaybe youâll see ghosts on your scavenger hunt,â Brendan said. âThis is the Fear family, after all. I know you all know the stories. Weâre evil.â
âSpeak for yourself,â Morgan chimed in.
âBrendan is the most evil,â cousin Kenny said.
Brendan ignored them. He held up a white envelope. âYou all were given these envelopes at the door. Take them out now. This is your list of the things you need to find for the scavenger hunt.â
I tore open my envelope and gazed down the list of objects:
A bird skeleton
A jar of silver bullets
A mummyâs finger
A black flower
A stuffed rabbit
A live tarantula
Raven feathers
A silver urn filled with ashes
Totally weird.
âYouâll have to do a lot of exploring,â Brendan said over the muttered conversations around the room. âThe objects you need to find have been hidden all over the house. And I have to apologize that a lot of the rooms and halls are dark. This is a summer house, and some of the generators have been turned off. Of course, finding things in the dark is more funâright?â
âDo you really have a mummyâs finger in this house?â April asked.
Brendan nodded. âDoesnât every house have a mummyâs finger?â
âHey, how come Geenaâs name is at the bottom of my list?â Eric demanded. âYou mean I have to find Geena?â
âEric, youâre at the bottom of my list,â Geena said, waving her piece of paper in front of him.
âThatâs because youâre partners,â Brendan said. âWeâre going to divide into twos. Your partnerâs name is at the bottom of the page.â
âYou mean I have to go into a dark room with Eric?â Geena cried.
Patti pointed to Spider at the end of the line of kids. I guessed she and Spider were going to be partners. Could she stand to be separated from Kerry for an hour or more?
âHey, Kenny and I are partners?â cousin Morgan said.
âNo one else could stand to be with you,â Brendan said.
âI canât stand to be with him, either,â Kenny said.
They gave each other playful shoves.
âYour cousins are cute,â Delia said to Brendan. âIf you shut your eyes.â
Laughter all around.
I raised my list and gazed at the name at the bottom of the page:
Brendan .
Brendan wanted me to be his partner.
I knew this was an awesome party!
Eric bumped up next to me. âRachel, whoâs your partner? Want to trade with Geena? Geena doesnât like me. You and Iâ?â
âI donât think so,â I said. âBrendan is my partner.â
Ericâs eyes went wide. He shouted: âHey, Brendanâno fair. You canât be in the game. You know where everything is hidden.â
âNo, I donât,â Brendan said. âI didnât hide the objects. Some of the workers hid everything before you all arrived. Iâm like you. Iâm clueless. Really. I donât know where anything is.â
Some kids grumbled about that. âBrendan, whoâs your partner?â Spider called.
âRachel,â Brendan said.
âOoh, Brendanâare you going to take Rachel up to the attic?â Delia said.
That got a pretty good laugh. I could feel myself blushing. âNo. Iâm taking Brendan to the attic,â I said. It was a lame joke. But it made Brendan smile.
âOkay, partner up, guys. Weâll meet back here in two hours,â Brendan said. âThe team that collects the most items wins. If anyone gets lost, just scream for help. Probably, no one will hear you. But itâll make you feel better.â
He started toward me,
