youâre Tom Greenâs friend, too. How can you possibly believe Tomâs guilty of murder?â
âI have information you donât, and unfortunately it doesnât look so good for Tom, Sister,â he said in a voice so quiet it was almost a whisper. âI know you want to poke around, but by doing that youâre making some serious enemies.â
âIt wonât be the first time,â she answered. âGood thing I have a powerful ally.â She pointed upward to heaven.

M ARQUEZ PAID FOR THE SANDWICH HEâD SELECTED , then left in the black-and-white state police unit. A second later, Smitty joined her at the door.
âYou donât look happy,â he commented.
âIâm afraid for Tom,â she admitted. âThe Garcia family wants someone to hang for this, and Tomâs the obvious target.â
âYou didnât tell Marquez about Scout, did you?â
Sister Agatha looked at him and blinked. âNo, we never got around to that. At this point, Iâm not even sure Scout saw anything. If I find out differently, of course Iâll pass it on.â
Smitty nodded, but before he could answer, a tall, stylishly dressed brunette wearing an overload of fine Zuni-style turquoise and silver jewelry approached them.
âYouâre Sister Agatha, right?â she asked, glaring though yellow-tinted designer glasses.
Sister Agatha nodded. âYes, can I help you?â
âIâm Elena Mora, a friend of Victoria Garciaâs, and I just wanted to say shame on you, Sister! People trust you because of the habit you wear and what you represent. By helping the guilty, youâre not only undermining law enforcement in our community, youâre siding with the devil.â
âYouâre badly misinformed, maâam. Iâm searching for the truth and taking care not to condemn anyone on circumstantial evidence alone.
Nobody
but Our Lord knows what really happened last nightânot me, and certainly not you.â
âPutting a different spin on the facts isnât going to excuse the sheriff for what he did, Sister.â
âAre you really so sure that heâs guilty? Unless you were an eyewitness, you should wait for the facts before you judgeâand condemn.â
âYouâre the one who refuses to see whatâs right there in front of your face,â she said. âAlso, Sister, thereâs something you might want to keep in mind before you muddy the waters. Your monastery depends on donations to get by, and the people in this town want to see justiceânot watch a killer set free.â
âThen weâre in agreement. I want to find a killer, too, and that canât be done with a closed mind.â
âSheriff Green
is
the killer. Wake up, Sister.â
As the woman walked away, Smitty gave Sister Agatha a worried frown. âYouâre going to have to be careful, Sister. A lot of people are indebted to the Garcias in one way or another. That includes me, too, by the way.â
âYou?â
âYeah, I got into a financial bind a few years ago, and thanks to JDâs character reference I was able to get a loan.â
âIâm glad he helped youâbut the mayorâs not my enemy, Smitty. If anyone deserves to learn the truth about how Robert died, itâs his family.â She paused and took a breath. âBelieve me,Iâm going to find the answers even if I have to pursue this case twenty-four hours a day.â
Smittyâs eyes narrowed. âThat hurry youâre in . . . itâs not just the murder, is it? Iâve had the feeling that thereâs something youâre not telling me. You and Sister Bernarda havenât been your usual cheerful selves lately, and your shopping habits have changed, too. Whatâs going on? If I can help, all you have to do is ask.â
âWeâre trying to work out some problems at home, thatâs all,â
