for him, because he could pretend heâd never had a child. So now you understand why I have to say no.â
âI understand why you want to say no,â he said. âBut Iâm so aware of you. And sometimes I catch your eye at work or at the stables and I think itâs the same for you, too. Thereâs chemistry between us.â
âYes,â she admitted with a sigh. âBut I canât possibly act on it.â
Though she hadnât loosened her hand from his. Which was a good sign. He drew her hand up to his mouth and kissed the back of it, very gently. âI like you, Louisa. And I happen to like your son. Heâs got a good heart and heâs kind. Yes, heâs very direct and heâll only talk about what heâs interested inâif you try and head him off, heâll changethe subject right back. Some people would find that hard to deal with, but Iâm used to that already because of Andy. It doesnât worry me.â
Her eyes were very clear. âTyler likes you.â
âGood.â He paused. And sheâd admitted that she was attracted to him. âThis thing between you and meâhow about we keep it just between us, see where it takes us? And, as far as everyone else is concerned, weâre just good friends.â
âYou mean, have a secret affair?â
âNo,â he said. âI donât mean anything tawdry or hole-in-the-corner. I mean weâll keep it to ourselves until weâre sure what weâre doing and weâre ready to let other people know that weâre seeing each other.â
âDid she hurt you that much?â
He frowned. âWho?â
âThe woman whoâs made you wary of relationships.â
He shook his head. âIt isnât what you think. I used to beâwell, I guess I had a bit of a reputation. All my relationships were short and sweet, just for fun, but it was always mutual. I simply never met anyone who made me want to change that and settle down. And thenâ¦â Then heâd caused his brother to end up in a wheelchair. Everything had seemed different after that. âLife changed,â he said, knowing it was way too succinct but not quite ready to tell her the rest. âI decided to focus on my career. Except now Iâve met you, and I canât get you out of my head. And you make me want to try to beâ¦â He paused, trying to think of the right word. âDifferent.â
âDifferent, how?â she asked. âWhatâs wrong with you as you are?â
A million things, Dominic thought. âItâs complicated. And I donât really want to talk about it right now.â He knew he was being unreasonable; sheâd opened up to him, so heought to do the same with her. But this was all so new. He wanted her to know him better before he told her about Oliver.
âSo this is just between you and me.â
This time, he knew, she wasnât saying no. âJust between you and me,â he echoed softly. He kissed the inside of her wrist, and his mouth tingled at the contact. He knew it affected her the same way, because he felt the shiver running through her. âLouisa.â
She cupped his face with her free hand. âIâm out of practice at this.â
âThat makes two of us.â He turned his head so he could kiss her palm.
âDominicâ¦â
And then he was kissing her properly. A sweet, tender, exploring kiss that left them both shaking.
A tear slid down her face when he broke the kiss.
âDonât cry, honey.â He wiped away the tear with the pad of his thumb.
âI justâ¦never expected this.â
âNeither did I. Work and the stables were going to be my life. Until you walked into the restroom. Thatâs why I was so rude to youâit threw me,â he said.
âI thought you were being all formal and unapproachable.â
âNo. I was trying to keep some distance
