in the middle of the go-cart races.â¦
Even when we went out for pizza afterward, I couldnât tell them because Yumiâs parents were at our table, and her baby sister, Suki, and her grandma. (Not the one who lives in Hawaii.)
Mrs. Tamagachi seemed sweet and all, but no way was I going to talk about liking a boy in front of someoneâs grandma. Itâs just not done.
After lunch and then another hour at the arcade, we headed back to Yumiâs for a âmake your own party hatâ craft, then a âmake your own sushiâ dinner and then a âmake your own sundaeâ dessert, followed by a âmake your own sleepover.â
By the time weâd rolled out our sleeping bags, I figured Iâd waited long enough. Not only was I exhausted from making so much stuff, I also knew that if I didnât say something tonight, Iâd never get the chance to. But for some reason, I kept stalling.
The timing never seemed right. Not even after Rachel brought up the school dance. âTwo weeks and counting until Valentineâs Day,â she said, looking at her watch. âTicktock.â
âDigital watches donât make that sound,â said Emma.
Rachel whacked her in the head with a pillow. âItâs a figure of speech, smarty-pants.â
Emma laughed. âI never understood that expressionâsmarty-pants. How can pants be smart? Or legs, even?â
Everyone groaned, and justifiably so.
Then Rachel started up again. âYou guys, this is serious. We need to make plans.â
âEasy for you to say. Youâve already got a date,â said Claire.
âI know,â Rachel said. âI just wish it was with Erik. Or at least with someone who was more like Erik. Like his secret twin.â
âErik has a secret twin?â I asked.
âOnly in her dreams,â said Emma.
Rachel turned to me and asked, âHas he asked Hannah to the dance yet?â
âNot sure,â I said, which was technically true. I didnât tell Rachel that when our other classmate, Becky, asked Hannah about the dance, Hannah had changed the subject fast, without answering her.
âYou should be happy you have a date,â said Claire. âLooks like Iâll be going solo, unless Yumi lends me one of her dates.â
âWhat?â Rachel and I asked at the same time.
Yumi blushed. âI kind of got asked.â
âBy two guys,â said Claire.
âAnd you didnât tell us?â asked Emma.
Yumi took off her party hat and tossed it aside. âIt seemed too braggy to mention and I donât know what to do.â
âWell, who asked you?â asked Rachel.
âDante and Ezra,â Yumi said.
I felt a stab of envy, even though I didnât know who either of these guys was. âI canât believe you have two dates.â
âNo, Iâve got none,â said Yumi. âYes, they both asked me, but I havenât given either one of them answers.â
âSo which one do you like?â asked Rachel.
âNeither.â Yumi shrugged. âI mean, theyâre both nice. Dante is a better baseball player, but Ezra is really funny. And not just gross armpit-fart funny or check-out-how-far-I-can-shoot-a-spitball hilarious. Heâs much more sophisticated.â
âToo bad you canât go with both of them,â said Claire.
âWell, technically you can,â said Rachel. âThe dance will be crowded and itâs not like theyâre even friends. So you could agree to meet them both there and just make sure they stay on opposite sides of the gym. Then you can run back and forth between songs, maybe changing dresses with each guy.â
âWhy would I have to change dresses?â asked Yumi.
âI donât know,â said Rachel. âMaybe to match each corsage?â
Yumi shook her head. âThat sounds like a nightmare.â
âOr an old Brady Bunch episode,â I
