red dot. And there are ten buttons down the front of her shirt.â
Lucy pointed to each of her buttons as she counted them out loud. Cam was right. There were ten.
âSheâs amazing,â Ken said.
Old Bob stood and called out, âWhat about me? You saw me outside when Lucy took my picture.â
âYou have a white mustache,â Cam said with her eyes still closed.
âWhat about my shirt?â
âYour shirt is white with green stripes. You have two pens in your shirt pocket. Youâre wearing black pants and white sneakers.â
âWow!â Bob said. âShe really does have a great memory.â
Cam opened her eyes. She turned and bowed.
People cheered and applauded.
Lucy Lane whispered to Mr. Jansen, âWe really have to go.â
âLetâs thank Lucy, who took your photographs, and Ken, who baked all the cookies and cakes,â Mr. Jansen said. âThe photos and cakes are their gifts to the center.â
The people in the audience applauded some more. Then Lucy Lane and Ken left the room.
âNow,â Mr. Jansen said into the microphone, âhere are two great jugglers, Eric Shelton and Beth Kane.â
Eric and Beth walked onto the stage. Each held two red rubber balls. They stood beside the microphone and bowed. Then they stepped to the front of the stage several feet apart and faced each other.
Eric threw a ball to Beth. At the very same moment, Beth threw a ball to Eric.
Just then Lucy and Ken hurried back into the room. They rushed down the aisle. Eric and Beth turned to look at Lucy and Ken, and the two balls bounced off the stage.
âI canât find my keys,â Ken told Mr. Jansen. âOn the way out I reached into my pocket and the keys to my truck were gone!â
Chapter Three
âThatâs terrible,â Mr. Jansen said.
âItâs worse than terrible,â Lucy Lane said. âThe wedding is in three hours, and we have to get there. Ken baked pastries, cookies, and a cake for the wedding and Iâm taking pictures.â
âHey,â Old Bob said. âWho stole the keys? Thatâs a mystery. I love mysteries.â
âI have my car here,â Mr. Jansen told Lucy and Ken. âI can drive you to the wedding.â
Ken shook his head.
âMy cake is in the truck. If I canât get into my truck, I canât deliver the cake.â
âI read lots of mysteries,â Bob said. âAnd do you know what? I always solve the mystery before the end of the book.â
âCam Jansen doesnât solve mysteries in a book,â Eric said. âShe solves real mysteries.â
Bob said, âI think someone reached into Kenâs pocket and stole his keys.â
Cam went to the window and looked out.
âThe truck is still here,â Cam said. âIf someone stole the keys, he would have taken the truck. I think Ken just misplaced his keys.â
Lucy told Ken to check his pockets.
âIâm right-handed,â Ken said, âso my keys are always in this pocket.â
Ken reached into his right pants pocket.
âNothing!â
He reached into the pocket on the left side of his pants.
âNo keys.â
âYou drove here,â Eric said. âYou had your keys then.â
âYou brought trays of cookies and cakes in here,â Lucy said. âYou used your keys to unlock the back of the truck.â
âYes, I did. Maybe I dropped the keys on the walk.â
Lucy and Ken left the main hall of the senior center. Then they left the building. Cam stood by the window. She watched Lucy and Ken walk slowly down the front walk looking for Kenâs keys.
âLetâs get back to our show,â Mr. Jansen said into the microphone. âHere again are two great jugglers, Eric Shelton and Beth Kane.â
âHurry,â Eric whispered to Beth, âbefore something else happens.â
They started juggling.
âKen found his keys,â Cam
