I hadn’t smoked since college, but suddenly it seemed like the most natural thing in the world. In this place – this clubhouse – things that had once seemed naughty and forbidden were as normal as breathing. I took a long drag and gazed out the window. It was a clear night and the stars were shining brightly. From somewhere else in the clubhouse I could hear the pounding beat of loud music. Everywhere I looked, I was presented with stark contrasts. The idyllic beauty of the Irish countryside and the dangerous people I surrounded myself with seemed to work together to form a harmony I’d never expected. Ronan’s world was not my world, but I knew then and there that the harmony that would be created by our time together would be just as beautiful.
    I tipped the ash from my cigarette into a beer bottle and pushed my arm beneath his broad shoulders. In my life before, I’d never truly felt safe. Here, amongst these criminals and vagabonds, I finally came to know real serenity.
