I wonât go back on my word.â
âSoâ¦we will be together.â
The vibrations of his deep tones raised goosebumps on her skin. âOf course. We agreed to put up with the temporary discomfort as a means to an end, didnât we?â she said with a lift of her slender shoulders.
There was a long pause and he held her gaze while his eyes liquefied. He took a step towards her and she felt her heart slamming into her ribcage.
At that moment, the boat unexpectedly lurched forward and then back again. Losing her balance, she fell into Dimitriâs arms. Although she tried to pull away, he held her tightly and after a moment she felt her flesh weaken and begin to flow into his. Quiescent, she looked up at him guardedly, allowing her body to respondâyet not her emotions.
âYooo-hooh!â shrilled someone on deck. âTi yinete?â
Dimitri froze. Olivia was wide-eyed at the sound of clattering feet. âWeâve docked,â he explained hurriedly.
âBut whoâ?â The words dried in her throat.
âPedhi mouââ
Olivia recognised the voice at once. Purring the Greek equivalent of âmy boyâ, Dimitriâs mother, flush-faced and excited, had come to the open doorway of the bathroom. Olivia swung around and Marinaâs elation turned to horror when she saw Dimitri apparently embracing his estranged, towel-clad wife.
âYou!â Marina croaked.
Olivia blushed, her bare toes curling with embarrassment in the thick carpet. âYes. Me.â Her eyes narrowed, seeing the disappointment on Marinaâs face. âYou thought I was someone else. Who were you expecting to find?â she challenged.
It dawned on her that Marinaâs tone had initially been indulgent, almost frisky. She hadnât been surprised or horrified to see her son snuggling up to a semi-nude blonde. Perhaps, she thought darkly, Dimitri and Eleniâs relationship had gone further than heâd said.
âEleni! IâI thought it must be her!â Marina stammered, confirming Oliviaâs suspicions.
She tightened her mouth. Maybe Dimitri had already made Eleni his mistress, but drew the line at marriage with the girl. Rat!
âShe has gone to meet her father,â Dimitri explained. âGood afternoon, Mother. Iâm sorry if we have embarrassed you. We werenât expecting anyone to drop in unannounced,â he added drily.
It was a mild rebuke, though affectionately spoken, and his motherâs bean-thin body stiffened. Olivia felt sorry for her, though she remembered how her mother-in-law had frequently interrupted them, deliberately destroying their romantic picnics and quiet walks, intruding on their much-needed privacy.
âWhatâs happening?â Marina quavered. âWhy is she hereâ?â
âI will tell you in private,â Dimitri said gently. âIt concerns the divorce. Iâll meet you back at the house and weâll go into the details later. Olivia, I suggest you get dressed. You know where the bedrooms are.â
With that, he turned her around and gave her a light and playful husbandly slap on her rear.
Olivia whirled, intending to give him a piece of her mind in return, but he put a finger on her lips and sent her warning messages with his eyes.
âRemember your promise,â he whispered into her burning ear. âAnd let me judge when itâs best to tell Mother. Sheâll get the message soon enough.â
She glared at him suspiciously, wondering if heâdstage-managed this moment. It was mighty convenient that his mother had walked in on them before theyâd had the chance to get their clothes back on.
Their gazes clashed. His was amused and simmering with mischief; hers ignited immediately at the thought of turning the tables on him. A tingle spread through her body, setting it alight with excitement. Sheâd never felt so fired up.
Right, she thought, enjoying the
